Was stalking your page waiting for this. A perfect finale. It’s been such a pleasure rewatching this with you guys. Btw, would definitely recommend watching the still pretty new show “Nobody Wants This” if you haven’t already. An excellent show with number of Good Place alum (as well as CXG and others).

omg yes it's heeeeeeeeeere! I joined your patreon after seeing some of your youtube vids and loved your reactions. so hyped to watch this. The Good Place is my single favorite piece of art or media, in any format. For the others here, I wouldn't mind getting recommendations for other reactors to watch who have finished this series. So far I've just finished The Normies' reaction to TGP. Very open to hearing who y'all think is also worth watching. Thanks! I'll drop another comment after I've rewatched-along with this reaction :)

dys

This was also the show that brought me to the patreon. As far as I've seen the Normies are the only other channel who've covered it with anything close to the insight Joe and Kevin brought.

After finishing the show, Mike Schur wrote a book about what he learned about philosophy and ethics in the creation of this show. If you're curious about or interested in philosophy or ethics, I highly recommend; it is a great intro book. The audiobook also utilizes the core actors!

The story starts out with Jason being inpatient/acting without thinking, Tahani being all about credit instead of substance, Chidi always second-guessing, and Eleanor being selfish. In the end, Jason learned the patience of a monk, Tahani learned the value of being humble and caring about actively doing things, Chidi had no second-guessing and just charged through the door, and Eleanor was selfless to the end.

the joke about the leftovers always makes me laugh--surprised to hear y'all haven't seen it!! it's one of my all-time favorites and the judge is correct--it was absolutely criminal that carrie coon was never nominated!!

Maxxie

Man, what a finale. It's really hard to have anything to say about it, it just feels so perfectly final. What I will say is that I've thoroughly enjoyed your reactions in particular. I watch a few reactors occasionally on Youtube for shows I'm interested in, but you guys are the only ones I've come to care about enough to start watching along for shows I haven't seen yet. So thanks for all the hours of entertainment ! (Although as a proud Parisian, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I died a little when the green door opened to the Sacré-Coeur and Kevin went, "India !" 😜)

Kimba

I love that you ended with Take it Sleazy!!

HereBeMeghan

Perfect ending to the show-- as you said, it was sad but also uplifting. Loved watching you react to this one!

Madison Kramig

Athens and Paris were shot on location! This whole finale gets me every time.

I truly feel this is one of the best finales to a show I’ve ever seen. The scene with Eleanor and Chidi is just so perfect. I actually went to a memorial service where they read the “wave returning to the ocean” excerpt. It’s a wonderful way to describe it. Also, if you didn’t notice, the bow tie Michael gives Tahani is the same one he is wearing when we first meet him in the pilot. And then she’s wearing it when she talks to Mindy. Love moments like that.

An amazing finale. Jason becoming an actual enlightened monk was the highlight for me. This finale is a close second for me behind The Americans. But in terms of season to season perfection, I'm not sure there's anything that beats The Good Place. + The Leftovers (that the Judge enjoys) is an amazing show, but it is also a TOUGH watch in places, (at The Americans level of grim I'd say).

nj

the one good thing about being on day 13 of a hateful respiratory infection - at least i had a box of tissues nearby for this episode. thanks to the judge's east dillon lions t-shirt, please accept this as another periodic plug for y'all to watch some friday night lights. 😉

Note: the way that Eleanor delivers the "pinocchio" speech she gives Michael at the end mirrors the way she reveals the twist from the Season 1 finale :) Nice callback by the writers there. Also: There's an official The Good Place podcast hosted by Marc Evan Jackson (the actor who plays Shawn) where they discuss every episode in detail and each episode he has various cast and crew from the show onboard to give their insights about how the show was made. It's an incredible companion to this series.

Rachel Thomas

This is one of the few shows I think you can describe as beautiful. The premise, the execution, and the care for these characters and their ending is top notch. So glad you both got to go on this journey!

dys

This is a perfect show to me. Brilliant premise, perfect beginning, incredible twists, beautiful and meaningful character arcs, and an 11/10 ending.

dys

I missed that Kevin said that XD When I visited Paris of course on my list I had Notre Dame (this was before the fire), the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Versailles, etc., but I'd never even heard of Sacré-Coeur. I think I was vaguely aware Montmartre in general was an area I should check out at some point. But the second I saw Sacré-Coeur in the distance I immediately knew we had to go there. And man is it worth it. Montmartre is by far my favorite of any neighborhood I went to and the basilica is just jaw-dropping.

tom

The endings are all very fitting. Jason waits and meditates, being patient instead of acting on his first impulse. Chidi goes in without a second thought, after spending his life and afterlives overthinking everything. Tahani becomes someone who helps people and is kind of like Michael's successor. It all ties in very well to their Season 1 selves when you look at what they spent their time doing in those early episodes. And Eleanor is selfless, doing good deeds and having gotten over her abandonment issues.

tom

I love the way Eleanor ramps up to telling Michael he will become a human. "I was thinking", "Then it hit me", "You're never going to...". All borrowed from the Season 1 finale with the "This is the bad place" reveal. So many parallels in this final season and episode especially.

tom

I don't know if anyone here has seen Parks & Rec, but my headcanon (even though I believe he isn't given a name in the credits) is that Nick Offerman is straight up just playing Ron Swanson in this episode when he's helping Tahani with the woodworking. Both shows are by Michael Schur so even though they don't confirm it I like to think of them as sharing the same universe.

tom

A finale without subversions. Well, there's some mini ones. Tahani and Jason's exits, for instance. But on the macro level, it all plays out straight and each character gets their ending. Plus all the minor characters we get to see!

Pam Nail

Beautiful finale for a beautiful show. And yes, they really flew Kristen and Will to Athens and Paris to film those scenes. Seth Myers hosted a special right after the finale aired with the whole cast, and D'Arcy Carden was wearing the J+J necklace as a bracelet.

Amelie W

As a wise not-a-boy once said, if you keep a story going long enough it will end in tragedy. I maintain the way they end the show here is a failure of imagination (on the part of the writers or of every character who elects to die, it fits either way), but we do get some great bittersweet conclusion out of it. And I love Jason showing how you don't need to be a great thinker or poet or doer of great deeds to reach the kind of complete enlightenment where a thousand eternities (or Jeremy Bearimys) pass in a moment. And Michael getting his wish that he ruined all of Hell to try and build for himself. (Trans metaphor, baby.) And Tahani mastering every human skill (making a chair that impresses Nick Offerman really sums all that up doesn't it) and then deciding to go further. I use the "I tell you this with all of my heart and all the wisdom in the universe" line for so many jokes

Real Talk Reactions is another good reaction channel for The Good Place. They are a couple, from Florida, who have finished the show. Their reaction to the Season 1 finale is one of my all time favorites.

Maria Stoycheva

I cried. I stared at you, wanting to see your reactions. I felt better about the miracle of life in general. I also multitasked and did some work because I couldn't wait until the end of the work day to watch this :D this place will always have a special place in my heart not only because it had a proper, strong ending, but also because I think it does something else very well too: it starts as a story about a boy trying to turn a girl into a better version of herself. and by the end of it, I think it manages to make all of us slightly better, more thoughtful human beings. I never felt preached to, I never felt I got a lecture, and yet somehow I got out of it appreciating life and human beings more. and I also had a ton of fun. have you considered watching Nobody Wants This with Kristen Bell and Adam Brody? I think you will really feel it at the heels of this series, since it features several The Good Place AND CXG cast members. Apart from being very warm itself, these actors also give you this additional cozy feeling, like spending a Sunday afternoon with good friends. I'll stick around if you decide to check it out. in any case, it was wonderful sharing The Good Place with you two ^_^

tom

And with that, it's been an honor gentlemen I joined for Mad Men, stayed for The Good place. It's been a great journey and I'm looking forward to inevitably returning. You guys cover a lot of great shows and your discussion is always very insightful and cathartic. Take it sleazy! And, uh, buy the world a coke?

Maria Stoycheva

I haven't seen it but I just googled Nick Offerman and apparently he really does woodworking on top of his acting. so I am guessing he could also just be playing himself. and Tahani, being the name-dropper that she is, preferred to take classes from him rather than the best woodworker ever (whose name might not be that well-known), so she could then casually drop it into conversations :D

Maria Stoycheva

it's funny that it starts as a sitcom, though, isn't it? how do you describe the genre to people? I always struggle to make it clear that it is both exceptionally funny AND deep at the same time. it somehow doesn't make sense. and sitcoms, to me, are not beautiful but I agree, this show sure is. it kind of grows into it slowly and, by the end of S04, you can barely remember that it started out as a comedy. it's gorgeous.

Maria Stoycheva

I've never listened to it but maybe now I will. my favourite part of Tom Felton's book (Draco Malfoy) were the bits where he talked about what the Harry Potter set was like, so I guess I would like that podcast too. also, I was recently incredibly lucky to see the fountain from S01 in person - it's at Universal Studios and they do a tour - and that felt really surreal ^_^

DelGuy03

Yes, they really went to Athens and Paris to film those sequences. They were the last filming for the series (except for PillBoi's bit), and needed careful scheduling to avoid crowds. Your reference to Tahini's parents' time in a Medium Place may have been a momentary aberration of forgetfulness, but just in case: only Mindy (as far as we know) ever got a medium place, and in the new system there is no longer a Bad Place: everybody enters a cycle of testing, again and again as long as needed, until they pass and get into the Good Place. (It looks like Brent may never pass, and no doubt there are others like him.)

arthistorian

Great reaction, but you missed Michael's finished song at the end....

Shannon Schwartz

Really enjoyed watching this (again!) with you guys. I've seen it through a few times, and I think the finale makes me cry more each time. The series was a masterpiece, and the finale was perfect.

Michael Manville

Thank you for reacting to my favorite show! One of my favorite minor jokes that you may have missed, Michaels name on the Coyote Joe rewards card is MICHAEL REALMAN. So his history with awful cover names followed him to his human form. The music in this episode is beautiful. This is one of my favorite episodes of television ever, and as much as I want to push back on this episode being “depressing” I can’t watch it without weeping so I get it. I guess I just see it the way Janet and Chidi do. “There were no bad parts, it was all good” and “none of this is bad” are very important lines to what this finale is trying to say. I hope you’ll do another discussion on the show and this episode once you’ve had time to digest it. NBC aired an after show with the cast that is worth watching and maybe even reacting to for an excuse to wrap up your thoughts. Marc Evan Jackson(Shawn) did a Good Place podcast that is worth your time if you’re interested in more Good Place content. I do hope you’ll react to Lost at some point. It’s very different tonally and a bit messier because of some scheduling and network issues but it explores a lot of the same themes that make both shows special. I’m sure you already have another comedy lined up but I hope you will get to Community as well. I think you would both enjoy it and it makes for great reactions. Take it sleazy!

Weird Magic

very well said about everything :) including obviously from all my previous posts Lost, but I'll also cosign-Community - I'm not sure they'll get Community, but I think it would be awesome if they do it and do get it. As for Lost - the only people that didn't like the ending were the ones that didn't watch from beginning to end - the casuals - reactors LOVE Lost almost uniformly.

Michael Cranis

Loved this episode, but would love to hear more commentary on it as a whole. I feel like this episode was so impactful and not just for this one show but for TV in general and it was one of the shortest after episode reactions. Would love to hear a deeper dive.

Jamie Morgan

Wow. The show that first led me to your Patreon is over, that's wild. No intention of going anywhere, though! I have one teeny tiny gripe with the finale, and that's that I feel Simone should have had a slightly bigger role in it. She was a fairly major character in seasons 3 and 4; having her say a couple of lines in one scene feels like a disservice. But that's literally it, everything else is done wonderfully! Despite being so sad, it's also such a hopeful end to the show. I like that we get to spend a bit of time with every character and see how much they've both grown and stayed the same (or in Brent's case, just stayed the same lol). It's a perfect farewell.

Roland Cooke

I think we should recommend to Joe and Kevin to carve out extra time for episodes like this.

dys

It is completely in character that Tahani would take woodworking lessons from Nick Offerman.

Kimba

Yes I wish they would have given Simone a little more of an ending. Like have her say something that reveals something about her afterlife. Let her design experiments or something. I’m sure it’s harder to do science in the good place but maybe they could have come up with something. But I loved everything else about the finale!

Kimba

They could have kept thinking about more things to do but that was not the point. At some point in facing eternity you no longer *need* to think of new things to do. They got to have as much time as they wanted, a lot of time. And then they get to rest in peace.

Amelie W

There's several questions I could pose about your post here, but I'll just go with the most obvious one: If you run out of new things to do, how about starting figuring out what things you like doing over and over the most?
