So many predictions about the endings for each of the characters and plotlines etc, keep 'em coming! Also, when the Series is over, should come back to this episode and see how you did. To set the new timeline: The Song "Don't Dream It's Over" from Crowded House released in 1986 On the wall of Philips office was a calendar set to Oct 1987 #GoTwins! The "Washington Summit" between Gorbachev and Reagan was Dec 8-10 1987 and most importantly - Elizabeth was wearing large shoulder pads :)

Dead Hand was a real Soviet program.

The (failed) coup against Gorbachev was lead by old-school hardliners, including the head of the KGB. The coup plotters were unhappy with the direction Gorbachev was taking the country, economy, glasnost, perestroika, plus the fear that the Soviet Union would splinter, and control over Eastern Europe would be lost. In the end the Soviet economy (which had been an illusion for decades anyway) collapsed as did the Union itself, plus independence for all the Eastern European countries. Understanding that chaos is a ladder, a young KGB officer named Vladimir Putin would grasp the reins of power, promising the Russian people peace and stability. And everyone lived happily ever after.

By the way - this "Checkov's Gun" thing you keep mentioning - you do know there is no such thing in this universe, right? :) It's been proven before that they don't tell stories like that.

The actress who plays the dying artist, Miriam Shor, will appear as a campaign worker in an upcoming episode of the West Wing. She was also on an amazing show called GCB with Kristin Chenoweth that only lasted a season.
