Everyone loved Signs? That was not my impression at the time. That movie had some really great scares, not talking about the jump scares but the more subtle stuff establishing the atmosphere; "There's a monster outside my room can I have a glass of water", the baby monitor scene, the child actors and the sound design were amazing. But I remember the movie not being well received overall and for good reason, it had a great second act that was ruined by its core theme relying too much on the idiot ball.

The reason someone wouldn't think this was clever is that a couple other works came out before this in the 90s with this exact premise of someone thinking they were living in the 19th century but actually living in a 20th-century preserve of 19th-century life.

Not films, but the novel Running Out of Time from 1995 was exactly this premise without the (fake) monsters. Read that for a book report in 5th or 6th grade.

This is one of my favourite Shyamalan films. I think the dialogue, acting, music and cinematography are some of the best in modern filmmaking. The use of colour, the monologues, the knife shot from above. I mean it was shot by Deakins for crying out loud :)
