Fear not Joe, theres plenty of other top shelf HBO series for you to get through. Wire, Thrones, Sopranos are at the top so you're doing good but hbo were kings of the Sunday night shows for about 2 decades. I could name a dozen "must see" offerings but I'll just mention Deadwood and Rome for now as they were part of that early 2000s "golden age" hbo put out. . Loooong way to go on The Wire though. You will not be disappointed believe me.

Youtalkingtome

Definitely. Rome, Boardwalk Empire, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, The White Lotus, House of the Dragon (when Joe is done w/ GOT), The Righteous Gemstones, Oz. Lots of possibilities from HBO.

omg Oz!! i'm still in the beginning of the show but it's my cup of tea and i literally haven't seen anyone react to it on YT so i'd definitely love reactions for this!

Season 2 was very divisive, when it premiered in’03, because of the new setting and characters. If anyone wanted to know where this country is politically with the working class and feelings towards politicians these next two seasons explained where we headed as a country. David Simon knew where we headed over twenty years ago.

Thinking of the nightmare of editing Deadwood or Oz for Youtube kinda makes me chuckle. Might have to be Patreon exclusives. Don't forget the amazing Mini-Series HBO used to make as well. Band of Brothers is something every youtube reaction channel does but others like From the Earth to the Moon or Generation Kill are also as good as they get.

You want to pay attention to the theme song - the song is the same, but the style, and performer change from season to season.

I *love* this season. I think I get why some don't, but I'm totally here for it. I like that we don't get to see all the old characters right away. We only see them when they intersect with the specific story this season is telling. James Ransone (Ziggy) is also in the Sinister movies and The Black Phone (Scott Derrickson likes to use him, I guess). He's a Baltimore native.

The biggest factor that made this season divisive was the expansion of the cast and some people who took issue with adding mostly all white characters to a show that season 1 was predominately African American. The cast had these same concerns and David Simon I think addressed it really well telling them that he could have kept it similar to season 1 and it would have been a good little show about cops and drug dealers, or they can mix and match the cast as needed to tell a great American saga of the downfall of a major city, which hopefully would benefit all the actors for being a part of it. It’s like season 2 game of thrones where splitting up the cast gave them an opening to tell more stories per season.

The bridge that is seen and talked about a lot this season is the Francis Scott Key Bridge which collapsed last Spring after a ship hit the major support. That cut many port workers off from the port and made it much harder for the trucks to get their loads to their destinations.

You got it right Jimmy's partner on the boat is the real boat captain. Except unlike Jimmy he liked the job. James Ransone who plays Ziggy is another Baltimore local who studied since high school for a professional acting career and his first big break brought him right back home after leaving for college. I talked to some of his friends from high school and they said he definitely has some Ziggy in him but was way more serious about his ambitions.

Throwing my hat in for a Deadwood watch! Three seasons plus an HBO movie.

Daniel Lydford

There's an element of the events of the first episode that you're missing.

I'm all for this season. If it's not my favorite season... it's my second favorite.

i'm also going to shout out sex and the city. it wasn't always great, but it was often fun and it had its moments. it was also a big part of hbo shows becoming appointment viewing starting in the late 90s, along with the sopranos. and samantha was right - that baby WAS an asshole. 😉

One show that is very much a hidden gem that is on par with much that HBO produced is the Showtime show Sleeper Cell that went for 2 seasons, 18 episodes in total. It had a strange release schedule where the episodes were released every weekday for 2 weeks so it was really a you had to be there or you missed it kind of thing so it never built any word of mouth over time.

Youtalkingtome

I like that. That makes total sense to me. I'm sure the show will continue to explore its racial themes while branching out and showing us the downfall of a certain working class.

Youtalkingtome

I haven't seen either of those films! I'm not a big Scott Derrickson guy. I do really enjoy James Ransone in what I've seen him in

Daniel Lydford

I wasn't sure if I should be giving it away, but there was a major plot point that was floated in the first episode that will be connected to the discovery on the docks.

The best HBO show, the best TV show period, IMO, is The Leftovers. Its final season has a 98 on metacritic and a 99 on Rotten Tomaoes. But yeah, Deadwood is great too.

John Sky

Deadwood is definitely another top tier prestige HBO, although it was cut short basically because of the big hollywood writing strikes, so they had a movie to "wrap things up" years later, which as you can imagine isn't ideal, I still enjoyed watching it several times. I believe Rome also suffered from those writing strikes. The Wire tops it just a tiny bit for me at the moment though because the wire is so much more ambitious and complex in scale. It's interesting to see your guys working out potential plotlines going forward. I love season 2 it is so GTA IV coded. And Frank Sobotka's actor is amazing and probably the reason I considered season 2 my favorite for a while was his performance. also a fun fact, I think he looks way older than he really is, the actor is only like 13 years older than Ziggy's actor, he was something like 35 when filming this.

John Sky

Only from these comments did I realize The Leftovers is also HBO. The Leftovers initially made me drop it because I thought it was going nowhere in season 1, then season 2 and 3 when I tried them years later absolutely blew me away and were one of my favorite television experiences, I hope you guys eventually watch The Leftovers (unfortunately it isn't reacted to at all almost on youtube and I guess its not so popular)

dys

He almost looks younger in the first season of For All Mankind 16 years later. I knew him first from True Blood, also an HBO show but not as "prestige" as the likes of The Wire, Deadwood, Rome, etc. It started out strong but became full B-movie camp by the middle seasons and unwatchable garbage in the later seasons. The buddy comedy between Chris Bauer and Ryan Kwanten's characters was a highlight at a time when the rest of the show was going downhill.

Having rewatched I feel I understand why many found season 2 the weakest season compared to the others. I don't know how much I'll talk about that now because I think it's especially obvious when compared to the show as a whole, but I'll say one thing I felt was a bit slow going on first rewatch is how in the first season all the characters were tied together by the plot, and here they no longer are - we're seeing the dock workers who will presumably be important to this season's plot, but we're also following the police characters and drug dealer characters from last season spread on their own storylines and it's not always clear how, when or even if those storylines will intersect again. Ultimately I think season 2 is a bit a victim to season 1's perfection. You said elsewhere that David Simon came to HBO with a 5-season plan but it still feels like Season 1 was made by people who weren't quite sure if they'd get renewed, because structurally speaking it could stand on its own as a whole show, with everything perfectly wrapped up at the end. But that means Season 2 is starting from a standing stop as it were, and needs to unwrap some of those threads.

Stephanie Bedworth

I wound up loving this season almost as much as the first one so I'm excited for you guys to get into this. Another HBO show that I think you two would be interested in is His Dark Materials, if you haven't seen it already, of course. Very few reactors have done it and I've never really understood why.

Youtalkingtome

Totally get that. I loved this episode. I am really into all the characters and I'm very curious to see where this season goes.

IDoDabble

This was the first time I noticed they were talking about 'Beth Steel', aka Bethlehem Steel in the intro - which was one of the clients in Mad Men. Also, 'Capitol Gains, Washington DC' is a GREAT name for that boat, if a bit on the nose. Not gonna lie, I love this season. It's the perfect second section of a pretty great polyptych.
