other cher movies worth watching: silkwood mask witches of eastwick mermaids and then there's burlesque. cher's great in it and i think it's fun, but i can't claim it's good.

love this movie. i definitely make reference to cosmo's moon when it's big and bright. pretty much everything they said in italian was either clear from the context or also said in english, so you didn't miss anything. and when you go to the opera, there's a libretto ("little book") that tells you what's going on (preferably in a printed program you can look at when you want and at your own pace - once when i saw madame butterfly, the libretto was projected above the stage like supratitles and i found it both really distracting and inconvenient because the words would move either too fast or too slow).

The opera was La Boheme by Puccini. The musical Rent is based on that opera. I’ve only been to the opera once in Denver at Opera Colorado and they had a translation on a tiny screen on the back of the chair in front of you like a running subtitle. They are putting sugar cubes in the champagne for good luck/sweetness. It’s a superstition. The grandfather shouts “the beautiful moon”and tells the dogs “look at the moon, the beautiful moon.” At other points he’s muttering to the dogs to “be quiet,” “come on, don’t pull, let’s go now.” He calls his son “a disgrace” at one point. Buona Notte!

- I love this movie so much and I've seen it a fafillion times. One of my favorite movies of the 80s and one of my favorite romcoms ever. - This was written by John Patrick Shanley, who also wrote Doubt and wrote and directed the underrated Joe Versus the Volcano. - Other Cher movies to check out: Mask, Mermaids, The Witches of Eastwick and Silkwood, which she starred in with Meryl Streep and Kurt Russell (and was also Oscar-nominated for). - This was a cool era for Nic Cage, well before his action star days when he was just a quirky character actor. Valley Girl, Peggy Sue Got Married, Raising Arizona, Vampire's Kiss and Wild at Heart are all good ones from that time in his career. - I don't know that Norman Jewison made a bad movie. Some of my faves of his are In the Heat of the Night (Best Picture winner), Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Only You (great 90s romcom with Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei). - I've lived in NYC for 16 years and while it's not cheap to live here, it's doable if you're willing to accept some trade-offs (size, amenities, commute time, etc.). That house is insane, though. If it were on sale today it would probably cost around $10 million. - I've only been to the Metropolitan Opera House once, but it's amazing. They have little seat-back LED screens that display translations of the lyrics in English and a few other different languages.

I saw Only You again recently, makes me want to move to Italy.

Out of Africa is an 80’s movie I go back to over and over again. It’s a long one, but beautiful. I think it’s on Max. You guys might want to do it in two parts (there’s an actual intermission built into the movie).

I feel like you guys have probably seen it already but I bet you’d love When Harry met sally.

Glad you enjoyed it! FYI Olympia Dukakis also won the Oscar for Supporting Actress. The writer is playwrite John Patrick Shanley. If you want another funny film directed by Norman Jewison look for “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming”—which also got a Best Picture Oscar nomination.

Thanks! Olympia Dukakis was fabulous here. And I have already used "I lost my hand! I lost my bride!" with someone.

This was a family favorite movie, we quote the entire thing! Every line is perfection! So glad you reacted to this!

Also, I'm going to see a production of La Bohême tomorrow because of loving the music in this movie

Yeah, this is always a ball to watch. One of my other all time favourite Nic Cage movies is Peggy Sue Got Married with Kathleen Turner, Jim Carrey, Helen Hunt, Sofia Coppola...such a great cast and fun movie.
