The criterion on the top of my wishlist is The Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight). The kids today will never know the sweet agony of waiting 9 years between each film.

The 2011 French film "The Intouchables" with English subtitles that won at Cannes was recently added to Criterion. Beautiful film that show a paraplegic Parisian aristocrat who hires an African home health aide from the local slums and they both teach each other the joys of life.

Thanks for the video—I enjoyed seeing and hearing about the films that have meant so much to you. You mentioned some of my favorite directors (Altman, Lumet, Malick) who seem to be directors that you are interested in also. And, of course, Scorsese whose work continues to inspire. I look forward to watching you explore their filmographies as well as many of the other directors you mentioned. Perhaps at some point the classic Hollywood directors (Wilder, Wyler, Huston, Zinnemann et. al) will also show up. It sounds like you have seen some Hitchcock — but there’s always room for more! 😀. Fitting it all in is a challenge but you will have such fun! Thanks again for sharing!

Oops forgot to tie it back to Criterion! Get someBilly Wilder — Double Indemnity, Ace in the Hole, Sunset Boulevard, The Apartment — I think some of those are on Criterion.

This is great! I, too, love "After Hours", and I just finished reading Griffin Dunne's newly released autobiography - which I do recommend - so it's been on my mind. I'm also a big fan of "The Tree of Life", though someday I'd like to discuss with you your interpretation of, well, all of it. I'm recommending you get Ingmar Bergman's "Fanny and Alexander" (1983) on Criterion. It's an odd film but visually amazing with scenes and individual shots that stick with you. Criterion has the theatrical release, plus the five-hour original Swedish television version. There's also a feature-length documentary about the making of the film. I think it's right up your alley. When you mentioned "The Graduate" you reminded me of an excellent book that I think you'd love: "Pictures at a Revolution: Five Movies and the Birth of the New Hollywood" by Mark Harris. It covers how the studio system in 1967-68 created "Bonnie and Clyde", "The Graduate", "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", "In the Heat of the Night", and box-office bomb "Doctor Doolittle", and how those films changed the course of Hollywood filmmaking.

Yes! I've heard of Picture at a Revolution! Fanny and Alexander is on my list. I've seen a few Bergman films and I've been meaning to check that one out! As soon as I do a rewatch of The Tree of Life I'm sending you an email to discuss it!

I know Double Indemnity and Ace in the Hole are in for sure. Wilder is another blind spot for me. I know it's insane to say this....I've never seen Sunset Boulevard

Jeff

Let me know when you might be doing the rewatch because I need to do one myself. I need it fresh in my mind to have any real discussion.
