tonight's MVP goes to Joe. my hero, my king. you're the fourth Lorelai in my eyes.

Emptysea93

And suddenly so many of Emily and Richard’s neuroses suddenly makes sense huh?

Emptysea93

Grandma Lorelei is amazing, I love her character so much even though irl she would be an absolute horrid monster to deal with, she is a perfect foil for Emily because she gets a taste of her own medicine a bit. She also elevates Emily not only making her more sympathetic but Kelly Bishop does hysterical so well, she is like a slightly toned down version of Catherine O’Hara when she gets that way and it’s perfect.

Such a fun episode. I love Emily and Lorelai being on the same side, however briefly (not about the money thing; about the coatrack conspiracy) and it’s fun that it’s clear at least Rory and Paris *can* get along, which bodes well for some friends potential if they can get past this Tristan thing.

Did anyone realize who the actress was that played Richard's mother, the first Lorelai Gilmore, aka Trix? Marion Ross... she was Mrs. Cunningham on Happy Days with Ronnie Howard as Richie Cunningham, and Henry Winkler as The Fonz!!!

Jonathan

I love this episode I was a little disappointed, that most of the other reactors I’ve seen react to the show don’t like this because they think that Trix is too mean. I have used that cheese line sarcastically

Peter

Paris is that kid who wants to be prime minister and not queen. I bet she played Jafar a lot on the playground.

Peter

Lorelai is being awfully condescending about junk stores given how much money she has spent at Mrs. Kim's.... (and also doesn't pick up her chairs when they have been purchased).

Peter

Rory ships Tristan/Paris. Or Triaris.

Youtalkingtome

We really had fun with her. Would she be fun to hang out with in real life? Probably not. But what a fun character!

Peter

Kevin! I can't believe you are not a Friday night guy! Did you learn nothing from Rebecca Black?

Peter

I like how Emily describes the coat rack as having "dragons or weasels" and then it has angels on it.

Peter

"What is this, Great Expectations?" Richard's mother is styled as if she was living in the 1890s.

Peter

Richard doesn't care that her mother offered that money, because of his relationship with Rory. But Emily knows that without the debt Lorelai will immediately go back to never seeing them.

Peter

You like Gran because she is Emily turned up to 11, and she treats Emily the way Emily treats Lorelai.

Elder Lorelai is very funny. She might get a bit much if she were around a lot but as a whirlwind shake-up she works really well. I was surprised Tristan had the tact to be gentle in letting Paris down. Obviously super unpleasant for Paris still but as rejections go, it could have been worse.

Skinny_Obelix

One date with Tristan and that is what lead Paris to leaking Leo's medical records in the West Wing, I'm telling you that guy is a rotter

The Inedible Mattman!

This episode hit me out of the blue because back in the second or third episode there's a scene at dinner where Richard speaks about his mother as if she was passed. It was a surprise to me to find out she was still very much alive haha I'd imagine they wrote that scene not sure that they wanted to bring that character in, so they made it sound like she had died. But it's nice that they included her! That "cheese" line might be one of the best lines so far in the show.

What led Headmaster Charleston to author an op Ed that Leo should resign in that same episode? Maybe Lorelei’s outfit on her first day at Chilton? ;)

I 100% believe that if Lore got that money, Emily would definitely see way less of her. Sure Lorelai has become slightly more sympathetic towards Emily but there's so much about her mother that makes her uncomfortable. And that's both of their faults even tho they do try to be better, for the most part. The two speak different languages and can't seem to find a space of peace not unless its Rory. I feel like Emily is Emotionally unavailable and Lorelai is super aloof when it comes to her parents.

Youtalkingtome

I think you are completely correct about both characters and their relationship struggles. I just really wish it didn't manifest in a way that ultimately hinders Rory.

UnKay

I gotta say this Tristan doesn't throw me off because I'm used to OTH. I watched it before the first season of GG (if you recall that story) so it's jarring the opposite direction for me.

For Rory, I don't think it matters a whole lot if her grandma or great-grandma pays for school. And Lori, we get the sense she'll be very open about the fact Rory having more independence is scary for her, but she's not gonna let it make her hold Rory back for one second. As per usual, the only real problem is everyone who has to manage Emily Gilmore's feelings. Probably everything would have been fine if Lori just said "whatever happens, I'm still coming for Friday night dinners, since I promised."

Danielle

Oh Trix! So funny how Richard acts around his mom. One of my favorite Emily episodes centers around Trix in the coming seasons so can't wait to get to that because it is sooo hilariously good and is a side of Emily we don't get to see often. As far as the money, I think it's important to remember that Rory is still getting the inheritance from Trix. She just isn't going to get it sooner for high school after that little dustup. So it's not like she was jipped out of it entirely. And if I remember correctly, Rory also has an inheritance that she'd get from her grandparents, too, when they died so Rory will be inherit a good deal of money around 25. And Lorelai absolutely wouldn't have seen Emily and Richard. The entire premise of the series is that she only involved her parents due to the deal she made with Emily about Friday night dinner and paying for school. If she didn't have to do it, she would have stayed estranged from them. So I completely understand Emily's fear and her projecting the fear of losing a daughter onto Lorelai because it's how she felt. Paris and Rory's complicated friendship is my absolute favorite on the show and it experiences many misunderstandings and setbacks over the series but it is one of the main relationships that make the series interesting and is one of the best things about the show.
