OMG. Love that you've watched this (and great suggestion from Jeff(?) for this). The late, great Roger Ebert championed this film, shouting its praises from the heavens. To answer the first question I heard (sorry, just started it to watch with you), this was a small film in America -- really limited release, even though director Bill Forsyth had had a bit of a sleeper import hit with the wondeful film Gregory's Girl a year or two earlier. What helped get this film some of the audience it deserved was that it was a staple of early pay-cable movie channels through the mid-1980s.

Oh, and if you were thinking the whole time: "Man, Gordon Urquhart sure does look familiar..." Yup. That's Denis Lawson who is probably more famous in pop culture as Wedge Antilles from Star Wars.

I liked this movie because, as you observed, it's quirky without getting too edgy and dark (except for Moritz, and the rabbit; I never understood why that was included). The humor is very understated and of course the scenery and music complete the whole vibe. The soundtrack is by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, who also did the soundtrack for "The Princess Bride", and it's a soundtrack I've been enjoying for forty years. The actor who played Gordon was Denis Lawson; he's best known in the US for playing X-wing pilot Wedge Antilles in the original "Star Wars", and he's Ewan McGregor's uncle. I have to admit that this movie makes me nostalgic for a simpler time of movie-making. It's just an unusual, pleasant little movie that doesn't have to resort to shocking twists or characters suddenly becoming psychotic in order to keep the audience interested. It's not trying to manipulate the audience at all; it's just telling a story. And I've found that, over the years, many scenes and individual shots have stuck with me and brought me back to it again and again.

OMG! I love this movie! I've never seen a reaction for it! I'm always trying to get the Scottish reactor Dawn Marie to react to it! You're the only other reactors it would even occur to me to do this one! Wow! Blown away! Ok, I gotta fish out my copy which is in my studio right this second, and I will be definitely watching this along with you guys. This movie made me want to two things: to live in Scotland, and to see the Aurora Borealis!!! (Have you guys ever seen it???)

Never seen it! However, this movie was filled with beauty. I do wanna move to Scotland, I was genuinely sad when he left. The whole time I was thinking, why would you wanna sell this place?

THAT WAS WEDGE! Holy crap how did we miss that? We freaking love Star Wars! You're not wrong either. Movies were much simpler. I totally agree that we need more movies like this

I cannot believe we didn't recognize Denis Lawson. I loved this movie and I agree that this is totally rewatchable. I wish that more folks have heard of it and that it was more available to stream.

Oh, I know that sad feeling this movie gives, I actually forgot about it until you just mentioned it! Definitely leaves a lingering feeling, like all the great movies! Bittersweet! The score really drives it home, too, I feel. Beautiful score. So happy you hit it!
