Onno Smits

I had no idea you guys were gonna start this! That's awesome! One of my favourite shows. The first season is incredibly corny, but it eventually finds a nice balance. 😅 I don't have time to watch tonight, but I'll jump into this reaction sometime tomorrow. 👀

nj

so can't wait to get home and watch this!

Skinny_Obelix

This is one of those shows I've never watched, but kept hearing great things about so I'll be jumping in here.

Laura Dawson

OMG! I grew up watching Buffy and still watch the whole thing all the way through every couple of years or so. Honestly, such a great show!

Erica

I was gonna go to bed but it's worth beung tired at work to watch this!

Kevin L

Well, it took all of 7 minutes for the first comment disparaging season 1. 😂 Just kidding Onno Smits, I get it. But yes Joe & Kevin, you will have to endure the fandom panting in anticipation of when the show gets really amazing. Myself, I love S1 warts and all. Enjoy the ride!

Erica

Also, yes, the movie isn't canon, technically. Parts of the story of the movie have been picked up as being in the canon, but again, very few parts. If you guys have any questions and the answers aren't a spoiler, I'm your guy 😂 I first watched buffy at age 8, in 1996 when it first aired because my sister and i loved stuff about vampires and witches and magic and stuff (we had seen the buffy movie and loved it already). Angel was my first love 😂 and that's my buffy origin story

Panos

One of my favorite shows! I am excited about the reactions and discussions to come.

Chris Warner

It is always funny that reactors get warned that Season 1 ain't great but of the dozen different reactors I have watched they all loved Season 1. It is probably the weakest season but it still has some very good episodes that hint at the greatness to come at the shows peak.

James B.

Oh, snap! LFG!

cruzinbosco

SO FREAKING EXCITED!!!! Now, you'll be watching both of my favorite series: BTVS and Gilmore Girls. So very happy. This show will change your TV-viewing life. Forever. 28 years later, and Buffy is still the show I put above all others. ❤️

Stephanie Bedworth

This is actually a pretty great show once you get through season 1.

Jeff

I avoided "Buffy" when it was first on because I'm not into vampires, but then I started watching season 2. (I later watched season 1, but it sure had a lot of hits and misses). I realized that the show uses and parodies all the tropes of horror stories to really explore the adolescent experience, and I was hooked. Over time it becomes much more layered and moving, while always remaining witty and funny. I think you're going to enjoy this ride.

Youtalkingtome

I was a young guy when it was on, and it didn't really seem like my kind of thing. But we loved the film and have heard nothing but good things about the show.

James Roberts

Well this was a pleasant surprise. One of my favorite shows since I was a teenager. You guys are in for a ride.

Jeff

I just thought of one thing, so I'd like to make a suggestion. You may get a lot of new Patreon subscribers because you're watching "Buffy", and they may not be aware of how vigilant we all are about avoiding spoilers. So you might want to mention it next time, and even suggest they use the "rot13" site for coded messages. It's worked really well for us rabid "West Wing" fans.

Emma Samuel

Damn. Clearly you are determined for me to stick around after The West Wing ends 😅 This was my teenage obsession and I haven't really gone back to the show since (who wants to relive being 15 in their late 30s!?) but now is clearly the time. It's going to be a real ride for you - you're going to be amazed at what a blueprint this show was for all TV and geek culture that followed.

Kevin L

One impressive thing in S1, I must say, is how much they accomplished with a tiny set and small budget. Yet Buffy managed to become the darling of the fledgling WB!

Pam Nail

So excited you guys are starting this! The start of the show is kind of the Evil Dead 2 to the movie's Evil Dead. It's kind of a reboot, but a lot of the elements are completely reinvented (you already noticed TV!Buffy's mom is very different to the movie version). And yes, future seasons are a huge step up from this one, but I think this one is still great. I smiled when Kevin said "Big Bad" because that whole concept was popularized by this show. The actor you mentioned wasn't in Three Amigos, but the guy who plays the Master is Mark Metcalf, who played Neidermeyer in Animal House.

Jonathan

I watched this series as it was on. Season 1 is fun low budget horror. At this point WB was still a small network it didn’t become national until midseason of season 2. I’m the same age as the characters are supposed to be so all the high school stuff was relevant when it aired for me.

dys

Definitely a different tone than the movie, though in a way that's hard to put into words. It's still plenty campy, cheesy, and comedic, but knows when to take itself seriously enough for the stakes (no pun intended) to matter. And it gets much better as it goes.

dys

Seeing Anthony Head play such an asshole as Rupert in Ted Lasso was quite a shock for Buffy fans, Giles is a beloved character in this show.

Emma Samuel

Tbf he also played King Uther in Merlin where he was executing people for being magical every five seconds 😄

EricG

Shiny!

dys

Watched maybe an episode or two of Merlin, wasn't my thing but had no idea he was in it.

Laura Room

Yes, big bad! This show was revolutionary in several ways. I love it so much!

Laura Room

I'm a little older at 47, but I relate. Buffy was my all time favorite show until the West Wing. I love both for their fantastic writing and actors.

Laura Room

Season 1 will have some bombs. Apologies in advance, but the series is WAY worth it.

Laura Room

I'm beyond thrilled that you're watching Buffy! If you love it, and you will, I recommend adding Angel when it splits from Buffy. (Should we tell you now when that is, or wait until it's closer?) There are several crossover scenes and it is best to watch in tandem. Buffy first, then Angel from the same week as they aired back to back on Tuesday nights.

dys

I too have a huge crush on Alyson Hannigan.

nj

also played an a-hole in season 2 of bridgerton.

Roland Cooke

I watched all of Angel when it launched, but only smatterings of BTVS. I barely remember any of Buffy, except for the more memorable episodes / scenes, so I'm looking forward to this journey. Excellent pilot overall, albeit a bit bumpy in the degrees of campness. There's a fine line between endearing and annoying (and there's probably a spectrum across the viewership). I will say that while 20/20 hindsight is obviously in play, I feel you can sense the real potential star power of several of these performers.

Roland Cooke

They'll probably need to carve out a slot in their schedule, so giving them a season's heads-up might make the most sense?

Youtalkingtome

That's really cool. It's making me nostalgic for TV when I was a kid. The hair styles, the quality of the picture. The lighting! Just need to watch a montage of early 2000s commercials now.

Youtalkingtome

That's our plan! Ultimately we're a couple of geeks and we're really looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Laura Room

Will do when it gets closer. If your schedule doesn't allow adding a show you could also alternate shows week to week. Buffy always aired first and they overlapped for 4 seasons.

Erica

This is the Buffy Joss actually wanted to make, he was actually very unhappy with the movie and left during its production. One major improvement is no PMS related vampire spidey sense.

Paul Verburg

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Three Amigos in its entirety, but I looked it up and the guy who plays The Master’s right-hand man here does have a role in that, actually. The actor’s name is Brian Thompson and, as Kevin said, his jaw line is indeed unmistakable. The first time I saw him was in The X Files and I’ve seen him in a bunch of other stuff since.
