banner night! buffy and deadwood on top of the wire!

nj

i also think you're fortunate to be watching deadwood now. i tried to watch it when it originally aired and couldn't tell a lot of the characters apart. when i went back years later, i recognized a lot of them from other shows and it made it a lot easier to follow.

Jeff

What a great surprise! I've only seen this once, when it was first on tv, so I'm excited. And like I said before, good luck editing this for Youtube!

Youtalkingtome

We made the same comments at the end of the show! I need to take notes like we did in the early days of The Wire.

MrRuss50

Oh hell yeah! I've never really been into westerns but this is just spectacular. It's got a language all its own(best of luck getting most of it on YT :)). Early 2000s HBO owned Sunday nights with Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome, etc. Thank you for spoiling us, its much appreciated. Ian Mcshane was born for his role of Al. Think Tony Soprano or Omar but maybe even better acted imho. You wont be disappointed, We Promise!

Ian McShane was on a very popular UK show called Lovejoy in the early 90s. It was a very family friendly mystery show so a very different tone from Al. It is kinda like Jerome Flynn (Bronn on Game Of Thrones) who was a 90s actor and pop star. Americans think of them playing cool characters and a lot of Brits remember them being kinda cheesy in the 90s.

Jeff

David Milch, the creator of the show, started with "Hill Street Blues" in the 80s and was co-creator of "NYPD Blue" in the 90s. Both series were similar to "Deadwood" in the writing and the morally ambiguous characters. Most of the characters are based on real people who were in the town of Deadwood, South Dakota in the 1870s. I have to say that, beyond being incredibly good-looking and charismatic, Timothy Olyphant has the coolest walk on tv.

My introduction to Ian McShane was on Kings, which he was fantastic in. It was also my introduction to Sebastian Stan and the first thing I saw Macaulay Culkin in as an adult.

John Sky

aww hell yeah Ian McShane steals every scene in this

Skinny_Obelix

Seriously what are you guys doing to me, another one I have to find time for...

Ingemar Svensson

Not just Trixie but also Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane is someone they roughed up for this show to not be as pretty. She plays a drunk so well.

Panos

Buffy, Deadwood and The Wire!! That's an awesome lineup. Just wanna recommend if you end up enjoying Deadwood, check out afterwards Justified, which is another incredible show with Timothy Olyphant and perfect dialogue...

Youtalkingtome

Very much looking forward to the rest of this show. I did get Tony vibes from Al. He really stole this episode!

Youtalkingtome

He does have a really cool walk. That's why David Milch sounded so familiar. I've never seen NYPD Blue but I have heard a lot about it!

You guys are the best. Is Silicon Valley on your radar? After Veep its my favorite comedy show.

Jori

For some background, David Milch is surely the craziest of the three Davids. The actors should get even more credit than they do knowing that Milch would often rewrite entire scenes the night before they shot them. Imagine having to learn that dialogue in a few hours!

Youtalkingtome

Yes! We have never seen Silicon Valley, and we have talked about adding it to our schedule down the road.

Love you guys for this!!!! Thank you!!!!

This show is like the Sopranos...You cannot binge it without it changing the way you speak... -"I hope Jane is a character we get a lot of" More than you can even dream of... -Al was played as an almost satanic character for about 1/2 the first season, then they realized what a great actor Ian is. They started softening him from the Devil to something of a man with a vision who will do what ever needs to do to get there. -Molly Parker is currently in a new medical procedural called "Doc". - Garret Dillahunt as Jack McCall is great. - Charlie Utter, as the friend/assistant to Wild Bill, is a great character. He and Jane are loyal to a fault to Wild Bill.

Great article written by David Milch regarding the swearing and the controversy it had at the time it came out. Basically, when he did his research he found the most offensive words would be like "God damn you!" He said if he used the actual language of the time every character would sound like Foghorn Leghorn lol. Article: https://lithub.com/david-milch-on-language-and-obscenity-in-deadwood/ If you went out to an environment like this it wasn’t because you were doing great in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. There were some personality attributes, maybe there was a warrant or two out. Because there were no laws, any question potentially had lethal implications. If I say, “Where are you from?” you’re usually gonna say where you’re from. In Deadwood, if you say, “Where are you from?,” the response was, “What the fuck is that to you?” Immediately it becomes a potentially mortal situation. It was a way of announcing “Don’t come in here with any weak shit.” But the obscenity is not indiscriminate. It’s calibrated according to the given personality and the given environment. The obscenity is meant to do a lot of different things. The language, it seemed to me, had to serve two functions. The first was to beat down the viewers’ preexisting expectation that any law would be obeyed, sentences so soaked with obscenity as to bleach out the expectation that civility could be expected to govern in any given scene. To ask the viewer to live in that emotional environment with the characters, that was the first part of it. I was also interested in the patterns of speech and the distinction between people who had what was called book learning and people who didn’t. The people who had book learning tended to speak in an almost Elizabethan way. This was Victorian times. For those who had book learning, it was the Bible, Shakespeare, Dickens, Victorian literature, plus adventure stories, but that access wasn’t strictly tied to class. There’s a story about Kit Carson riding seven days to get his new collection of Sir Walter Scott. It seemed to me that the people in that environment who had recourse to books were highly, highly motivated. It was an alternative state of being for them, which stood in contrast to the way they were living. And so I found it credible that people who had recourse to that sort of rhetoric would go for the gusto. Trying to get those rhythms right was a challenge, but it was one I very much enjoyed. Most of the show is written in iambic pentameter. I believe one way God says, “I too have a hand here” is in the rhythms and metrics of speech, that the metrics of speech are important and representative of our fellowship even in those of us who feel, mistakenly, that we are separate from each other as individuals. When a character in Deadwood, or anyone, talks in certain locutions, unbeknownst to themselves, they honor a divine presence.

Also, part of the reason for it getting canceled after the 3rd season was because of how expensive the set and costumes were that Milch insisted upon. He also was not immune to that other foible of great writers, like Sorkin, of being behind and writing lines of dialogue five minutes before they shot....which is never great for keeping the budget low.

JVTrickypants

Also, if I didn't express it enough already....thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Actuarial Lurker

Thank you- great choice- since there are only 3 season of Deadwood, please consider Boardwalk Empire as the next series in the queue

Paul Verburg

Hey thanks for putting me through the anguish of choosing between Buffy and Deadwood with that poll. I felt so conflicted. 😁

Youtalkingtome

I love that he didn't compromise his vision for a budget. Sucks that the show got cancelled because of it, at least they got to make the movie

Youtalkingtome

I'm really glad he made this choice. It did have a certain rhythm to it. It might seem a little gratuitous but it's not over the top and even when it does get to a certain point. It feels like there is a reason for it. I can get behind that

Youtalkingtome

Can't wait to see these character get fleshed out more. So glad this was a long episode, could have easily watched another hour!

Raul Panzar

The dialogue on this show is legendary. Imagine Shakespeare writing a western. Those who disagree with me are a bunch of limberdicked cocksuckers!
