Ooooh, it bothers me so much that Hulu lists this episode as "The Witch". It's meant to just be "Witch", as a play on the word 'which' because you don't know which witch is the witch!

I like this episode - it's a fun setting, a decent plot, with good guest actors. The show is at its best when it's using the supernatural as a metaphor to explore coming-of-age stories and this episode starts to get it. I'd also forgotten what a nice episode this is for Giles - he shows that he's willing to get his hands dirty to protect Buffy and that he genuinely cares what happens to her. (Though YEESH at that 'hahaha just joking!' line about Xander perving outside her bedroom window.)

- I know fans who've seen the whole series tend to be meh on the early episodes, but I like this one a lot. The body swap twist always sends a chill down my spine. - I'm so glad they immediately branch out to non-vampire foes after the opening episodes. And this is a really good example of how the characters work together to solve a problem. I like the comparison to Mission: Impossible -- everyone has their strengths and something to contribute. - One of my favorite things about this episode is how it establishes Buffy's relationship with her mom. Buffy's mom in the movie is only in one or two scenes and is basically only there to be a punchline about parents who barely interact with their kids. Here, the mom is busy, sure, but she cares deeply about how Buffy is doing and how they relate to each other.

I agree about Buffy's mom and I had meant to talk about it when the episode was over. In the movie, her mother clearly meant to be detached because she was so rich and selfish. I like this version of her mother much better.

For about 15 years there was a tv website that went through many name changes but it became a popular place for tv writers to get feedback most stayed anonymous except Sorkin who famously couldn’t help himself and wrote it into West Wing. A lot of nicknames from the site made it into shows including a few terms on Buffy.

A fun fact - the little couplet or. "who does she think she is, a laker girl?" "i heard she turned them down" is likely a nod to charisma carpenter's previous career as a cheerleader for the Chargers! Alsl, this episode, while a bit silly at some moments, has a horrifying scene that i still cant watch or think about, even decades after the first time i saw it (the girl with no mouth 😬)

James Roberts

A decent season one episode that uses the villain of the week storyline to explore a deeper theme. In this case, mothers and daughters. In the real world, someone like Catherine would be trying her best to live vicariously through Amy by forcing her into cheerleading. But in this world, with its supernatural elements, we get the body swap. I also liked us digging a little deeper into Buffy's relationship with her own mother and the challenges they can face trying to relate to one another.

Since a reaction video is different from a rewatch podcast, i highly recommend the rewatch podcast "Buffering the Vampire Slayer!" if you go back to the beginning of the show you'll get their spoiler free recaps, and host Jenny Owen Youngs wrote a different song specifically for each episode!

I never actively noticed the crane shots, but you're right, there are a lot of them and they use them for the establishing shots too. I saw you're watching this on Hulu. Is it the (absolutely awesome) 4:3 aspect ratio version of the show? Hulu doesn't exist in my country, but Disney+ has Buffy. Unfortunately, it's the horrible 16:9 HD "Remaster" which is terrible for all sorts of reasons I won't go into. So I had to pull my old (semi-legal) rips out of storage to watch along with you. It syncs up perfectly, thankfully! Better than Gilmore Girls. I have to watch my copy of that at 0.96x speed and pause for 1.5 seconds at the ad breaks to keep it synced with you guys. 😂 So I appreciate the small border around your face-cam to have a nice visual cue to work off of. 👍

Just in Case you were wondering, there was a pretty good (91% Rotten Tomatoes) TV movie made in 1993 called "The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom" about the Texas event you were thinking of. Holly Hunter and Jeff Bridges received Emmy's for their performances.

It really annoys me when TV networks/streaming services think they know better. This is a show that is very careful and clever with its word choices, the writers of the show called it "Witch" for a reason, adding the 'the' may make it more marketable or cool or whatever, but it actually diminishes the meaning of the episode.

Just FYI, the next episode is THE ONE that comes to mind when I think of the 1996-era effects of this season.

I'm so excited you're doing Buffy! One of my favorites, and one that I rewatch pretty often. One minor annoyance (that you can't help): I just can't seem to sync these episodes. I keep being in sync and then I'm not. Never had this problem with The Wire. But I'm watching an original dvd. It makes me think that maybe the remaster that I suspect you're watching (that's the one the streamers seem to have?) has not just been recolored, but also been fully re-edited. (The remaster, fyi, is... commonly accepted as.... not great. Special effects and color grading have been redone, and also the aspect ratio changed. But it was all done pretty sloppily and some of it came out quite differently from the original.)

Youtalkingtome

Oh man I'm sorry. Yeah that's really unfortunate. We're watching this on Hulu in The States. I really enjoy the show so far. I loved Mad Men so much that I bought the box set. I wonder if this will be a similar situation for me. Are there blu rays for this show available?

This is an episode that's fun to rewatch (at least if you remember the twist & when it kicked in, i.e. before the episode starts) because Amy's dialogue is absolutely transformed. Everything she says makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE when you know it's the mom talking about herself & her life and not Amy's point of view! And the line "I know it's hokey but I love my mom". I have to believe that even in 1996 this was the tell to end all tells, how did anybody believe she *wasn't* a bodyswapped mom in her teenage daughter's body the second she said that. The absolute "how do you do fellow kids" of it.

Rozenn Keribin

Fair enough ^^ I talk a big game given I was very much 87 at heart as a teenager too. (and in many ways I'm sure I still am but I was cartoonishly so as a teenager, which I guess kind of goes to the main flaw of my argument: teenagers exploring identities *will* be the kind of over-the-top I'm pretending was a tell here) I do think it works very well though on the level of "Buffy uses the supernatural to explore real teenage struggles". Because my comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek wasn't it, there *are* teenagers who would speak like that about their parent. And isn't it ~interesting~ that this is indistinguishable from the parent themselves having taken over their body... It's like, I'd see a teenager in that situation as having internalized that their parent is more important than them & they're their spokesperson. Also thinking back to the "I can't move my body the way she could" - what an absolute vindication of Amy's POV when you think of it. This whole time Amy's mom thought Amy just needed some drive to become a cheerleading prodigy like she'd been but turns out even Amy's mom can't pull it off! Bodies are just different sometimes!

IDoDabble

There are, but for any boxsets pre-remaster you're going to have to turn to second hand, I suspect.

IDoDabble

Good to know, Onno. I had problems with the sync, but we'll see whether they persist throughout the season

About the music: pretty sure that's Eurodance' classic duo 2Unlimited, of Dutch persuasion

If you "sail the black seas" 🏴‍☠️ the "1080p AI Upscale DVD x265 HEVC 10bit AC3 Vertag" release syncs up perfectly with the boys, whilst also being the original 4:3 aspect ratio version. It might be legally dubious (depending on your country of residence), but if you literally own a copy of the DVD, I doubt anyone would argue it is morally dubious.
