President's Day....or Presidents Day? 😘

Martin Nicholls

Oh hey the president has broad executive power. This is of course one of those really prescient episodes - Iran later did exactly this, arguably in some ways worse given the aircraft was taking off from Tehran, with Ukraine Airlines 752 - though I'm still not entirely convinced it wasn't intentional given the timing - or possibly even Iran taking out some if its own people intentionally, though IDK why they'd wait for a flight, for cover, I guess? You'd think they might have learned from watching the show. Time has made talks of a nuclear deal with Iran so completely absurd, too. I think the western world takes far more comfort in the fact there's no situation where Israel is going to allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons and has the spy network to effectuate that, more than is probably a good idea.

“Tell me you’re calling about some guy you met in a bar,” lol, CJ. "Gerald!" Oh how I’ve missed you, Lord John Marbury. If Jed and Abbey had better communication this wouldn’t happen and it’s not the first time, Leo used to get in the middle of things all the time too. So, good on CJ for standing up to it all. I LOVE next episode, can't wait for you to see it. Thanks, guys!

The West Wing doesn't get enough credit for so accurately predicting Prime Minister Theresa May - it's eerie. That said, Graty's accent is embarrassingly awful and makes me cringe every time.

Loved seeing Christopher Lloyd in this episode! I'm such a big Back to the Future fan so seeing him guest star in anything always makes me giddy!! 🤗

Belarus remains a brutal dictatorship....

I gave you the warning so you wouldn't see Rodger Rees' name! Soooo glad you didn't clock it & we got that reaction when he's 1st mentioned!

In relation to Miss Bhutan attracting large numbers of male admirers, I once flew from Heathrow to Barbados for work. That would have been a tough enough gig on its own, as you can imagine, but to pour salt on that wound on the flight I was forced to sit for nine hours next to a very attractive Croatian model traveling for a beachwear photo shoot. At airport Immigration I was pulled into a sideroom because there was a minor issue with my paperwork. The very attractive Croatian beachwear model was also pulled into the sideroom, presumably because she was a very attractive Croatian beachwear model....

I can believe it - bet she got asked to do an accent that an American audience would prefer. Edit: OK I went down a rabbit hole and she grew up and was educated abroad (likely surrounded by posh Brits) and then went to drama school. So I think it's a mix of posh/theatrical RP that hasn't been softened/modulated as it would be by growing up here. Interesting. (I'm a voice agent so this is the sort of nerdy thing I'm interested in. )

I like the B-plot about the Belarus delegation more than the rest of the episode. It's particularly poignant at the moment, when the US's relationship to its own constitution seems so much in peril. Happy Buy-a-Mattress day to all who celebrate!

I personally feel that the best parts of the show from now on are the development of the characters of CJ and Josh as they grow and change over the course of the next year. That's not to say that the other characters lack interest or complexity; I just think that the writers knew what acting powerhouses they had in Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford so they consistently wrote to their strengths. Joe, I'm tracking the growth of the 'stache, and am eager to see the completed project ... months from now. You might need to select which "Deadwood" character you want to most resemble.

This was a good episode, but it seemed like they were trying to do too much. Christopher Lloyd! The return of Lord John Marbury! Abby fighting with everyone! Strong component parts, but kinda underbaked ultimately.

Youtalkingtome

I know, my main takeaway was CJ is a rockstar. LJM could be in every episode somehow and I'd be delighted

Youtalkingtome

I can see where you're coming from. Still very compelling and I enjoyed seeing how chaotic things are around The WW right now.

When I was Lithuania in 2018 there was graffiti calling for freedom for Belarus all over the place. It's such a stark contrast between two neighboring former Soviet countries, where Lithuania joined the EU and NATO and became a thriving democracy with relatively high human rights standards and economic opportunity, and Belarus stayed under Russia's thumb and became a stagnant and repressive dictatorship.

Michael Bennett

CJ in season 1: "That's your advice? Get in the president's face?!" This is a great episode but suffers greatly from "I want to know about the primary campaign" syndrome. Lots of good stuff here though, the return of Lord Marbury, and Chris Lloyd teaching us about constitutional values being as important as the document itself -- which will never cease to be relevant.

As I understand it, the justification was three of the most consequential presidents have birthdays around this time (Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln). It is a public holiday, I had the day off, but not as many businesses will be closed as for say Christmas.

dys

Christopher Lloyd is playing a real person here, Lawrence Lessig is an extremely influential figure.

Heather

Underbaked might be the wrong way to put it. Rushed is more like it. Which is probably how we’re supposed to feel at this point, come to think of it.

Nine hours on a plane next to a model, what a hardship ;) I only was a couple rows from a nonstop wailing infant on a 19 hour flight from New York to Tokyo this past summer so I can hardly complain

dys

Man when non-American actors do a bad American accent I don't even notice half the time, probably because my own accent is not all that easy to place due to bouncing between the northeast and southeast US growing up. So that is fun, you're so on the watch for a bad British accent that you had a false-positive on a British actress, and I'm the opposite and rarely notice even an especially bad American accent.

Bartlett no longer being physically quite up to the demands of the job hits so different now, after Biden's presidency. It seems Biden had a lot of similar adjustments to his working hours for health reasons in the last year or two of his term. Unfortunately while Bartlett's impairment is only physical, I do think Biden was clearly having cognitive decline. I was really skeptical of that for a while, because his opponents were already insisting he was senile in 2020 when I was watching him give nuanced, substantive answers in long form to difficult questions in town hall settings. But by that first 2024 debate it was clear he was no longer up to the job, IMO, in a way that isn't the case for Bartlett so far.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, Leo took so much grief from Abbey on behalf of Jed he should have gotten a Presidential Medal of Freedom for it.

Youtalkingtome

Honestly, America is so wildly inconsistent from administration to administration with its foreign policy that I'm sure there are cottage industries around the world whose sole job is to figure out what to expect from the US from week to week.

Ingemar Svensson

Lawrence Lessig is actually a real person. You might remember him briefly running for President in 2015. It's one of the few characters on the West Wing that actually portraits the real person.

Youtalkingtome

They are absolute powerhouses, I don't mind when a show has been on for a while and the writers play to the strengths of the actors. Also the 'stache is quite itchy and in no way will it be Deadwood quality. However, I would grow one as big as Docs if I could!
