"Selfishly, I want more Vinick." Me too, Kevin, me too. Donna yelling at that chicken is the highlight of the campaign thus far. The constant push and pull between Santos and Josh is so interesting to watch. I love and miss Amy so much. Amy and Josh have the best chemistry and no one can tell me otherwise. I like that she stands up to Josh and, with that ego, he needs it lol. I too love the campaign episodes more, it's the shake up the show needed in s6. Great episode, great reaction!

Thank you! Amy has always been such a great character and a great foil for Josh. She is everything they wanted Mandy to be in S1. :)

I remember watching this when it aired, and finding the campaign episodes more interesting than the White House episodes.

As I recall, the show does start to become more campaign-focused. I agree that that’s a good thing. And yes, there is more Vinick coming up.

Youtalkingtome

He is probably the most interesting character they've introduced in the last few seasons. I'm ready for more of him.

That one comment early in the episode: "V jbhyq yvxr gb frr gung (n qrongr)" - V nyzbfg fpernzrq. V pna'g jnvg sbe gurz gb trg gb gur yvir qrongr.

Such a good episode, and probably one of the rare Amy episodes where I don't disagree with her politics. Regardless of the intent of the Will/Donna dinner thing, I always feel it's a sort of code for their doubts - they can't quite admit they picked the wrong guy, but they can at least have a meal as the only two political equals in the vicinity.

“Didn’t you teach that girl not to engage a chicken?” I do miss funny CJ!

In the 1992 presidential campaign, then-President George Bush refused to accept the debate rules handed down by the debate commission. The Clinton campaign sent a couple of guys in chicken suits to follow him around (though they didn't say anything) and it REALLY got in Bush's head. I like this episode a lot. The last-minute live ad feels very much like a Bartlet move. I've never been an Amy fan, but she bugs me less in this episode than normal and her insistence that Josh sit still and do nothing is about the smartest she's been on this show. Still, her debate training feels like red carpet fashion commentary. I also kind of enjoy that Donna calls bs on her Pakistan line. Even more I love that Donna is the one with the words of wisdom that convince Russell to go to Santos's debate. It may end up helping Santos more than Russell, but it was right (and non-cheap) thing to do. I know everyone loves the chicken thing, but Donna has some great, smart moments in this episode and she's come such a long way from her goofier stuff in the early seasons.

Donna has come such a long way since being the character who asked Josh policy questions for the benefit of the audience.

I think at this point the show wants you to feel that the campaign is more interesting. Similar to the real world, after years of dealing with a President and all the people surrounding them it’s interesting to see, new candidates with new ideas, it just adds a freshness. However they still have to go back to the White House because if it’s not the media focus anymore they’re still running the country.

When the show first aired I was less interested in the campaign episodes, but over the years I've grown to love them, and I'm really enjoying rewatching them with you. That Freedonia question, or a similar one, was really asked of senators in 1993 by "Spy" magazine: archive.seattletimes.com/archive/19930113/1679750/freedonia-new-lawmakers-snared-by-troubles-of-a-fictional-land I'm really looking forward to next week's episode; it's one of the best of the season, if not the series.

The writing is so quippy and punchy in this episode, and we get the chicken suits, and Amy taping Josh to a chair, great stuff. The point they make about the debates is great, but Amy's point about the presidential voice is a bit more subtle, the difference between commenting on events and shaping them. Santos finally gets out of the passenger seat with that ad, and ends up changing the primary debates.

So disappointing that we didn't see the debate - I guess this wasn't the debate episode ;) Originally airing on February 16, 2005, 'Freedonia' is Episode 15 of Season 6 of The West Wing. It is the 126th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.2, placing it as the #7 ranked episode of this season and #51 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Oh that's interesting that these episodes didn't interest you as much! Glad you can reevaluate them with us!

The chicken thing is one of the things I remember most from James Carville and Mary Matalin’s book! 🤣

One interesting effect of the bi-weekly format: they can bravely skip ahead in storyline in the campaign trail. From the early, very small beginnings in introducig the campaign in New Hampshire, to the tough time in Iowa and corn, to the campaign intensifying, and the non-viable candidates starting to fall out now and Santos trying to stay in the race... it does jump from episode to episode. And because two weeks pass, and things are happening in Washington in the meantime, you will automatically accept that things were happening while our attention was on the other plot, and things can progress out-of-camera too.

Balazs Foldes

it reminds me of the early Bartlet shots we had at the start of the Bartlet campaign, at the beginning of season 2 (shadows of two gunmen). Remember how Bartlet could not find the voice, and just spoke in an event as an economic professor, trying to explain the dairy farming issues about subsidies to audience? And then, in the end, changed to some kind of value statement (we must make milk cheap for our children, this is more important than profits of farmers), and spoke the truth. And that got attention.
