Actuarial Lurker

BRUTAL anti-N@zi film. Joel Grey is crazy good...this really gets to my Irish born wife wife since the "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" song is an Irish folk song about freedom and is perverted in the movie.

Actuarial Lurker

The scene with the women dressed as Apes is a call back to "The Eternal Paddy" political cartoons where Irish Catholics are portrayed as mad gorillas who r@pe and pillage

Actuarial Lurker

This won 8 oscars...including Grey and Minelli...well deserved and haunting...up against The Godfather and Deliverance....

Fosse/Verdon is one of the best mini series. You guys would really enjoy it.

In the Heights and Tick Tick Boom are two modern musical exceptions that are great, but overall I agree musicals aren’t as good as they used to be.

Jonathan

Joel Grey originated the role of the Emcee on Broadway so he knew it well.

I wasn't sure how you guys would react to this, given its dark, nontraditional style, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. The film is quite different from the stage play, which is also different from the source material "Goodbye to Berlin" by Christopher Isherwood. Sally Bowles was based on a 19-year-old British cabaret singer named Jean Ross whom Isherwood befriended in Berlin (unlike in the movie, they were only friends). She left Germany in 1932 and surprisingly became a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War. She was later an accomplished writer who was involved in anti-fascist organizations and led a very politically active life. While I'm so glad you watched and appreciated this, next time I'll pick something a bit more light-hearted. If I can find anything.

Thank you for your pick! This is one of the all time greats and I'm glad that I've finally seen it. Every aspect of this film was flawless.

I love Tick Tick Boom — Andrew Garfield is brilliant in it. Any movie where Stephen Sondheim is a character is aimed at my heart.

Also if you haven’t watched the original West Side Story …. well watch that one please. In my opinion it’s significantly better but I understand modern audiences view things differently.

Fosse was a great dancer, then a great choreographer, then a great director. You can find Youtube clips of him in his film appearances. Also, the movie Chicago is an adaptation of one of his shows and is great. You can see hints of the Fosse choreography throughout the film.

Grey won over three nominees from The Godfather: James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Al Pacino.

gotta gotta gotta watch All That Jazz, the most interesting musical I've ever seen. one of those that if you stripped the music from it, you'd still be looking at a great film. and maybe the first example of an autobiopic, as in made by Bob Fosse about Bob Fosse. The only other example I can think of is the Fablemans, but if anyone knows others, let me know

Youtalkingtome

I head that Armageddon Time, by James Grey is very similar in that regard. I will check out All That Jazz eventually. I try to avoid watching new stuff in case we watch it here on the channel.
