Ahhhhh! Don’t drag Shakespeare in Love! 😭 A brilliant original script by one of the great playwrites of our time Tom Stoppard. A working knowledge of Shakespeare maybe helps to enjoy it 🤷‍♂️ I’m going to go cry into my pillow now…..

PS You guys can drag whatever films you want lol. I’m used to hearing that particular opinion honestly — after I lay on my fainting couch for a minute I’ll be fine. 😀

Kevin- now you see that this wouldn't have been any better as a date movie than The Aristocrats. I'm probably a few years older than Joe, I was just old enough to be able to get into R-rated movies on my own when this came out and went along with a friend who had read the graphic novel (which I still haven't) to see it in theaters. I had really mixed feelings on that first and only viewing before now. Oh boy do they establish they're good people... that first intimate scene between Tom and Edie definitely comes across as super wholesome on this viewing even knowing where the movie goes, and this time I can totally relate to them... but the first time seeing this when I was 17 it actually felt kinda weird and creepy seeing these 40-somethings roleplay being 17 again in bed? So I think if I had only seen this movie for the first time now at closer to the age the main characters were supposed to be I would probably have been way more shocked at the reveal of who Tom really is, but at 17 the whole vibe felt off from the beginning for reasons I think Cronenberg didn't even intend. "Not exactly a situation where your dad's a mob boss"... well, just wait... I saw this after having seen all the Lord of the Rings movies in theaters multiple times and I did not realize until now how much Howard Shore's score here has in much in common with his work on those films. Howard Shore is one of the most brilliant film composers of all time but wow, a lot of this score sounds just like the LOTR score just dialed back a bit.

Honestly, I like Shakespeare in Love. It's probably the best adaptation of R&J on film (after the Zeffirelli). It takes heat, from me included, because of the Oscar love it received over SPR, which is a film I think is historically more significant. The belief that it only won because of a massive marketing campaign behind Harvey Weinstein can't help. But there is nothing wrong with Shakespeare in Love.

I remember hearing about this movie when it came out, but didn't see it until just now, watching along with you guys. It's definitely an interesting character study. Although I couldn't help but wonder if Viggo's character here was a sort of prototype for Liam Nissan's character in the Taken movies -- ex mobster with family resumes old skills when said family is threatened... But it doesn't have the same emotional/moral weight around the violence like this did. Interesting to think about though.

I bet this was the blueprint for many action films to follow. I loved how this on paper sounds like an action film but it is so far from it

Howard Shore is indeed a legend. Maybe a top 5 composer of all time. I can't get this movie out of my head. How simple and tight it really is, yet it's so weighty. Great film
