The Children

From your intro: "I don't think we're gonna lose more characters this episode" iiiishhh Charles Dance, great actor, but happy to have him out of the way.

At this point I would strongly recommend watching at least the first Histories and Lore video. It has a lot of background information on a number of things and specifically on the Children, which from what you said seems right up your alley. I know someone said these videos contain spoilers for House of the Dragon (which I disagree with by the way, House of the Dragon assumes viewers already know these things from the start) but the first volume has no such spoilers and the whole Children storyline next season won't make as much sense without it. That look between Jon and the Red Lady over the flames is just so ominous - I remember the first time I watch it, it chilled me to the bone, and I was like, "well, this can't be good..." On a different topic, this show is full of great fight scenes but the Hound - Brienne fight is one of my absolute favorites. They're two forces of nature, and as the fight goes on it's more and more primal, like two wild beasts - had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

So you've reached the "real" last use of direct material, unfortunately. From now on, some parts are from the books, but more and more will not. Still an amazing show, but some plotlines will be not as high level.

Love how this is a real end of season episode with all the plot lines being seen and dealt with. Yes, we want to see where it's going, but it's not cliff-hanger style. And it was dealt with such masterful writing and acting. You have emotions from: The dragons being imprisoned, The farewell between Tyrion and Jamie, The pyre for Ygritte in the "real north", The battle between 2 characters we love (Brienne and Sandor Clegane... another dual sides dichotomy, like with the Blackwater Bay battle between Tyrion and Davos), and Arya's choice of not giving the killing blow to the Hound (he tried to goat her into doing it, but he went a bit too far in his words... she was then not willing to do it, but not scratching him off her list either!)... What a show!

Arya's choice is a really interesting one, isn't it ? I've seen some people argue that she chose to spare the Hound because she grew to begrudgingly understand him while they were travelling together ; but while I do think she has mixed feelings about him rather than just loathing as she like to pretend, her sparing him is actually due to her deciding that he doesn't deserve the mercy of a quick death. We've seen her become more cold and hardened by all the horrors she's seen at such a young age, and to me this decision is the culmination of that evolution.

There's still SOME stuff left from the books, but it's kind of jumbled into elements that are essentially where FUTURE books will get to- sometimes in the exact same location- so *for the most part* what comes next is original to the show. There are a few things left from the books, and some of it is major, so it isn't safe to read them quite yet. But we're getting there.

Remember that Brienne was fighting with half of Ned’s sword, Ice, to defeat the Hound. Seasons 4-6 are when the series hit its apex in the public zeitgeist. In my opinion this is the last “water cooler” tv series. I can definitely remember coming into the office on Monday mornings and having a five to ten minute conversation with coworkers about previous nights episode.

I'm right there with you on the dragon chaining scene. They're not even real creatures, but just when I've stopped crying from the performance of the bereaved father, that scene makes me a weeping mess. Also, just in general, the performances in this one are INCREDIBLE. Even with how screwed up it is, the glee in Cersei's eyes (something that's usually just awful) when she tells Tywin that his entire legacy is a lie... it's glorious.

Thanks for still doing this with all the issues you had Monday and Tuesday. For me this is the end of the best season of this show. There are many amazing episodes in the seasons to come, maybe even better individual episodes than the Mountain and the Viper or the battle at the Wall, but as a season of TV this was the peak. Everything with Bran, Hodor, Jojen, and Meera in this episode is already well past anything the books got to. That whole scene with the skeletons and the fireballs tbh felt like it belonged more in something cheesy like Army of Darkness or Monty Python than in what we had seen from this show so far. The whole confrontation between Brienne, Pod, Arya, and The Hound is not past what the books have got to, it just didn't happen in the books. Arya just left the Hound for dead with the wounds he got in the last episode we saw the both of them in, and neither of them ever met Brienne or Pod, and the Hound just died offscreen as far we know. I can't really say anything about the actor behind the Three Eyed Raven without spoilers, but just wait.

Genuinely I get so confused when people refer to Davos, the economic thing or whatever it is in Switzerland, because to me Davos is the Onion Knight. This Brienne v the Hound fight is so brutal and so well done. Major kudos to both of them because filming that must have been a beast.

This episode was directed by Alex Graves, who also directed 34 episodes of "The West Wing" including the one you're watching this week, "Drought Conditions."

So much excellence in this masterful episode. After many rewatches I'm still struck by Jon and Melisandre locking eyes through the smoke & flames... by Cersei telling her disbelieving father "Yes you do"... by Jaime coming to the rescue, and Dinklage's performance (at least as impressive here as in the trial) in the harrowing scenes that follow... by Brienne & the Hound, with Rory McCann's work as thoroughly awesome as ever... and by the great decision to end on Arya's sailing away, hopeful (to that glorious final image and music), to new adventures unknown.

Also wanted to comment on Shae's character now that her story is over, she's actually a lot more developed and sympathetic in the show than in the books. In the books it's a lot more strongly implied that she's only with Tyrion because he's paying her, and even Tyrion reflects that he's lying to himself that she could genuinely love him. So the "betrayal" is a lot less shocking.

Youtalkingtome

We don't get the inclination that's the case in the show at all. I believe that she did love him. That made this betrayal such a gut punch. Especially since he told her what his father has done in the past.

Youtalkingtome

It's a perfect episode of television. As good as anything The Sopranos, Mad Men, or Breaking Bad has ever done.

Youtalkingtome

Davos will always be the Onion Knight to me. Yeah, I couldn't imagine filming that scene. I bet they were sore beyond belief after that

Youtalkingtome

I wanna address the skeletons, I loved it. It felt like 50s or 60s camp and sometimes that's a good thing. I didn't realize we are already past the books a bit

Youtalkingtome

I love talking about this show with my friends even though they finished this show so long ago. They just look at me and go "finally."

Youtalkingtome

I took it as he doesn't deserve the mercy. Like she has grown to understand him, but she knows that he doesn't get an out like that. It's gut wrenching

Youtalkingtome

Charles Dance is an absolute legend and gave the performance of a lifetime. It was SO satisfying to watch him eat those arrows.

John Marnell

Severance is getting there. If it stays hot through the rest of season 2 I think it gets water cooler status sometime in s3

trenton gragg

This issue with Severance is it’s a streaming show on Apple. Severance also had that long break between seasons. GOT was Sunday night appointment television on HBO. GOT crossed a lot demographics in age, race and gender.
