LETS GOOOOOOOO been waiting months for y'all to meet jess!!! staying up past my teacher bed-time to watch this one :)

I dated a guy in high school who was basically a short haired version of Jess. That’s how much of an influence this show had on me. He liked Tool and some of Jess’s favorite writers and would drink while we talked on the phone. I convinced him to take the AP English class along with the rest of us preppy smart kids. Also he marked up my copy of House of Leaves and I was incredibly upset. Trying to fix people doesn’t work.

Ah, Jess. While I do appreciate Lorelai making an effort, I also think her approach here was flawed. Jess has no reason at this point to believe Lorelai when she says she’s “been there” or that her childhood was also troubled. And even if he did, I’m not sure he’d appreciate the comparison, especially since at this point she doesn’t know anything about him! And just given their family backgrounds, you know that their family issues are very different. Definitely not blaming Lorelai—he’s literally stealing her beer at the moment—but I think it ends up being a bad first impression all around.

tbh I do think Lorelai was overstepping in what she was saying to Jess and I think his reaction was reasonable and justified. She kept saying that she 'gets it', his rebellious teenage thing, - except she doesn't. She always had a wealthy family to fall back on. He has a deadbeat dad and an unstable, irresponsible mom who sent him away to live with an uncle he barely knows and away from everything he's known his whole life, and where he has to work in the diner. None of this was Jess' choice. Lorelai really does not get it. Regardless of how awful her family is, it was her choice to move out, it was her choice to leave financial and familial stability. He never had any wealth, financial stability or choice to begin with.

Now that we’re at this point, I can tell you why the layout of season two has been bizarre. They loved Milo when he auditioned for this part. Unfortunately, he had also shot a pilot for a teen sex comedy starring him and a then unknown Chris Evans as the first two male students in a prestigious all girls school. To everyone’s surprise, Fox picked up the show for a small order and they decided to delay to see if it got canceled so Gilmore didn’t have to recast. I think the other show got canceled after the third or fourth episode.

Yayy been waiting for Jess’s arrival since you guys started the series. Ultimate childhood crush

I agree with other people's comments about Lorelai's attempt at talking to Jess. Her intentions may have been good, but to him it probably just sounded like a stranger telling him she knew better about his own life. It also feels to me like she had already made up her mind about Jess being a bad kid before he even got there. About the fight, I agree that Lorelai knows more about parenting and that Luke's comment was totally out of line. But, what he said just before was interesting : "you got lucky with Rory". It's true that Rory has always been, for the most part, a good kid who never gets in trouble (except for that one time staying out with Dean and everyone freaked out). She and Jess are not the same, the parenting required is a bit different. I think that Luke's assertiveness at the end was effective, not because Jess responds more to strong authority, but because as flawed and messy as Luke's attempt at parenting has been so far, that last speech showed that he cares - "I won't let you drift away, I won't let it happen". On a separate note, this is one of my first times commenting (sorry for the novel), but I have loved rewatching Gilmore Girls along with you guys and seeing your reactions as first time watchers.

Oh Jess... the second best character on the show after Emily. Also the love of my life as a teenager. He is also the reason I have watched Milo Ventimiglia in so many good things and so, so, so many bad things. Have you seen Cursed? Because I have watched Cursed multiple times for Milo Ventimiglia.

Peter

Paris chose violence by giving Rory that parking lot story...

Peter

Rory could look into Roman concrete, which no one knew why it was so sturdy for thousands of years because when they write "water" no one realized they mean "sea water."

Peter

Paris is so delighted to torture Rory.

Peter

Largely the problem they are all having is they aren't treating Jess like someone who was abandoned by his mother two days ago. They don't even really attempt to understand his history or circumstances. You are right that he has no power and almost all of his behavior is very obviously a combination of attention seeking as well as aserting control in a situation where he has no control. Luke really should be looking into family therapy, rather anything he did this episode.

Wanted to wait an episode to comment on Max. I put the convo out of mind, because Rory is such a goody-goody and she liked Max. If she wasn't needling Lorelei about it, it was easy for me to assume he was told off camera. Also, I want to go on record and say that I hate Jess with the fire of a million suns.

Write as many novels as you please! We enjoy everyone's comments and love to hear all perspectives! Very well said

People are gunna people lolol. Change comes from within...Idk it's late. Also we discount the fact that they are in high school and are still figuring out who they are. I can't wait to see who Rory is by the end of the show

I think it depends on...who can fix who. A parent? Perhaps. Or a teacher or someone (some people) can have a positive influence and then they can grow (or not). A girlfriend CAN'T fix a boyfriend, that's for sure. That is not their role.

Aude M

Milo Ventimiglia was Jack Pearson on 'This is Us' and he was Peter Petrelli on 'Heroes'. Seems like a good guy. He just got married and became a father for the 1st time some weeks ago. And that's all I will say for now :)

Don't worry, everyone laughed at him getting pushed in the lake! Jess is probably one of the most debated/controversial characters in terms of some people loving him and some people hating him -- I think you guys are absolutely right that he is clearly flawed, has no support system, can't fault him for who he is but he needs to get his act together at some point -- can't wait for you guys to keep seeing how both Jess and Paris evolve (and we do actually get a Jess/Paris interaction at some point, and I do agree that they would be an incredible couple lol). I think Paris ends up being my absolute favorite character (along with Emily) throughout the whole run of the show.

Kirt, Emily, Paris, Mr. Medina, and now Jess. All characters that appeared in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Huh, it’s kind of interesting that the episode starts with Taylor telling the kids that people who break the rules get in trouble - aimed at Lorelai. Given her position the rest of the episode. I feel like (a) Lorelai’s whole idea of rebellious kids is so far from the gritty experience that is Jess’s life that, like most rich and privileged people, she automatically sees that whole world as dangerous, and (b) her whole viewpoint always has Rory in the forefront and no matter how liberal a person she thinks she is, she does immediately see anyone who isn’t a rule follower as risky to be around Rory. It’s one of those moments where she really does act like, you know, a regular old adult mom with suburban prejudices.
