Wow what a surprise!! This is my favorite comedy ever since I was a kid. I sure am hoping you both enjoyed its goofball humor. Here we go ……

Jonathan

Buck Henry was one of the creators along with Mel Brooks of Get Smart and this is classic Get Smart with their usual jokes removed. I only discovered this movie last year but I love it.

Ironically you both mentioned the stunt work. This was actually the very first film that listed the stuntmen in the credits by name. You also both caught on relatively quickly the Looney Tunes inspired comedy. This film has a huge cult following. Peter Bogdanovich took inspiration from the 1930’s screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby.

Buck Henry has had such an amazing career, but I know him most from the early days of SNL and as Dick Lemon.

That's a great piece of trivia about the stuntmen. This show felt very much like a love letter to Looney Tunes.

No way this is my favourite movie what are the odds!!

Glad you liked it—I wanted to give you guys a laugh! And anytime I can recommend a movie with Madeline Kahn I can’t resist. The movie is a throwback to the screwball comedies of the 30’s and 40’s (from directors like Ernst Lubitsch, Howard Hawks, and Preston Sturges) and very specifically Hawks’ “Bringing Up Baby” (1938). All highly recommended btw. As for “Love Story”, it was indeed a drama with O’Neal and Ali MacGraw. It was based upon a very popular novel and there is folklore it is inspired—in part—by Al and Tipper Gore. It’s not a great film imo.

And don't forget he played the Escort in "Heaven Can Wait" and co-wrote the movie.

I remember seeing this (more than once) when it was first released. As a musicologist, I can say that pretty much all the "musicological" talk in the movie is complete hooey, but who cares? -- as you said, what a good time! This was around the time of The Pentagon Papers, so the idea of the release of government documents that "the public needs to know" was very much in the air. And I had recently stayed in the hotel where they did so much filming, the San Francisco Hilton (on tour with an army band).

The character played by Kenneth Mars, Hugh Simon, was openly intended as a caricature of the movie critic John Simon, famous at the time for his Slavic accent and his snobbish disdain for almost everything. He loathed Peter Bogdanovich and especially Barbra Streisand. (In his review of the movie, he said that said that she looked like "a cross between an aardvark and an albino rat surmounted by a platinum-coated horse bun.")

It's fascinating (and wonderful) that your immediate reaction at the first sight of Streisand here was to say in unison, "She's so gorgeous." I agree! But I'm old enough to recall that that wasn't the reaction when she was starting out. Some stage directors refused to consider casting her because they considered her so obviously ugly. She entered movies as a star, in Funny Girl, and her talent forced the public to pay attention. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that she permanently reshaped the cultural idea of what beauty is.

Magic

A bit off topic, but I'm wondering if you guys were still planning/would consider on doing the show Severance? It's an amazing show, id love to see y'all react 👀!! Love the reactions

What an amazing movie. A few years back I saw one of Barbara movies and immediately fell in love. If you looking for something else with Barbara please check out Funny girl (1968), Hello dolly (1969), The way we were (1973). If you liked this genre (screwball comedy) you must see Bringing up baby (1938), His girl Friday (1940), Arsenic and old lace (1944), My man Godfrey (1936), Barchelor mother (1939), The Philadelphia story (1940)

Yes, we will be doing Severance. We have a copyright strike right now for For All Mankind, and until that is clear, we aren't touching an Apple+ show. But down the road, absolutely.

Youtalkingtome

If that was the hot take on her at the time, then yes, she absolutely helped redefine what beauty is. She is absolutely stunning.

Youtalkingtome

You have led an interesting life! You're right, the Pentagon Papers leak makes perfect sense for some context of that aspect of the movie.

Youtalkingtome

I keep talking myself out of my morbid curiosity to watch Love Story at some point. Thanks again for sharing this movie with us. It is great!

Tara

Omg this was so high on my list to ask you to watch! One of my fave films of all time - I know what I’m doing today!!!

Tara

I’d like to second Bringing Up Baby - amazing wonderful movie. This movie is loosely based on it.

Joe here, it is currently 3:35 in the morning, I just got off work and I will absolutely be firing this up!

For Kevin: this film's writer, Peter Bogdanovich, is of course Dr, Melfi's "supervisory" psychiatrist on The Sopranos that peer reviews her patients- which is typical regardless of your seniority in the profession (my spouse is in the profession)- good professional practice is to have a colleague make sure you aren't screwing up the therapy you provide

Actuarial Lurker

Hate to hear that...you guys are super careful with copyright and actually analyze the content, unlike other "reactors" who give Beavis and Butthead like watches that say "that was cool" and don't remark on the characters, camera work, writing etc

Actuarial Lurker

Joe and Kevin- have either of you seen the 1978 film "Foul Play" with Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn, Dudley Moore, Burgess Meredith, and Brian Dennehy among others...that is a NEO-noir comedy thriller...it received SEVEN Golden Globe nominations, it was written by the same screenwriter as Harold and Maude who directed the comedy 9-5

Jeff

I really enjoyed "Foul Play" when I was young. I'm surprised more people haven't heard of it.

Magic

AWESOME!! thank you for the quick reply... The wait is definitely gonna be worth it!!
