The writer of this episode is the showrunner for Angel and the only writer from season 1 of Buffy who got a full time job going forward into future seasons. You’ll know from watching Buffy when we get to the start of the Angel series.

We of course will not be spoiling anything about the "Angel" series, but now you know it won't be about "Angel: Monster Hunter District Manager."

- In the rot13 last week, I joked that we probably had one more intro with you guys joking about how Angel never does anything. And then of course Buffy makes that exact joke herself in the cold open. - So yeah, this episode is a biggie as far as lore goes. We get a whole lot of backstory on Angel, including his relationship to Darla and the Master, as well as a bit more about vampires in general (confirmation of the invitation thing, the nature of vampires as soulless and how Angel is unique). - Darla coming in with those guns CRACKS ME UP. Did she wander off the set of Face/Off?

This is your first taste of the Buffy whiplash. As you said this is very different in tone from the last comical one, and that’s a Joss Whedon trick. He frequently puts the lighter, comical, or campy episodes right before or right after the most dramatic episodes. It is a way of not only “palate cleansing” before or after dark episodes, but it also helps the overall tone of the show which is largely campy and fun, but will occasionally come out swinging with some dark or emotional gut punches.

I agree! I think this will really help set up some character arcs moving forward throughout the series, and I am here for it.

There is a REALLY big example of this several seasons ahead.

More than that, David Greenwalt was co-exec producer from the start, as the studio needed to pair Whedon with someone with more TV production experience.

Safe to say David Boreanaz was cast largely for his looks, but he proved to have much more to offer soon enough.

I just love how much your "Angel is never around" commentary ramped up leading up to this episode - you even mentioned it in your reply to my comment last week and I didn't even bring him up! XD Adding my voice to those who want you to react to Angel! It's not quite as strong of a series as Buffy overall, but it still has some of my favourite episodes of any television show ever. There are a couple of reactor-specific watch orders floating around the internet to give you the best viewing experience (though obviously you can watch the shows any way you want to, if you even choose to watch Angel at all).

Darla busting out the guns always cracks me up.

I love the story of how he just happened to live in the same neighborhood as the casting director , who saw him out walking his dog and thought he was really good-looking .

You caught the Budapest reference, but there's another subtle Avengers cross-ref in ep 4. Xander mentions shawarma while rambling about greek food at Ms. French's house. Which I just discovered is a reference to Nicky's audition for Buffy, apparently him joking about shawarma is what sold him as Xander to Joss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf6uozvtggY

I love Darla so much, and her getting the guns out is a reason why. It's interesting you picked up on her upcoming death so quickly, it always takes me by surprise when I rewatch, she made such an impression on me I always feel she can't have died this early! But I guess once she volunteered to "take care of" Angel & Buffy it was hard to expect another outcome.

Though i do wonder what the show would be like if ryan Reynolds (who auditioned for xander) had been cast 🤔

And the casting director was very pleased to find that he was indeed an actor, not just a random hunk. Hey, he'd done one episode of Married With Children! :)
