Fun movie, Shane Black's writing is like nobody else. The Nice Guys is in similar vein, possibly even funnier.

I love this movie! It's definitely worth a second viewing. And when you do watch it again, you'll notice that Perry is breathing after he gets shot. I'm glad you didn't notice, though. Makes the payoff more fun. For what it's worth, Nice Guys is a great companion piece. Very similar tone, great dialogue, great chemistry between the actors. And RDJ makes a hilarious cameo that you'll almost certainly miss until someone tells you.

If you love Predator, I highly recommend Prey from 2022. I love this movie a lot. After watching him struggle for so many years, it was so great to see RDJ bounce back in a movie where the director knew exactly what he was capable of and how to best use him. And yes, you should definitely see The Nice Guys eventually. Very similar vibes to this movie.

I hadn't seen this movie until a friend of mine randomly said, "A talking monkey, yeah, yeah. Came here from the future. Ugly sucker. Only says 'ficus.'" It was such a bizarre line, I knew I had to check it out. So many quotable lines, and such great comedic performances.

OMG, the script for this movie was phenomenal - absolutely hilarious! I loved all the meta commentary, alternate celebrity names, and grammar notes (I write for a living, so that was *chef's kiss*). Beyond the many nods to '90's action movies, I think there were quite a few parallels to classic Hollywood as well -- Joe, I know you mentioned 'Marlowe' and Bogart movies; but also, the shots from the pool at the beginning felt like something straight out of 'Sunset Boulevard'. As a side note, I've never seen 'Predator' (I know, I know), but I might have to now considering how much you both hyped it up 🙂

So fun watching this again🙂. For the record, Xanadu is a cult classic for a reason. It’s a campy disco musical staring Olivia Newton John and Gene Kelly. All the songs were written by the Electric Light Orchestra (the soundtrack IS awesome). There’s singing, a big-band rock-band mashup, and an animated sequence where the main characters turn into fish and birds. Oh yeah, and a chunk of the movie revolves around roller skating, and mythological beings from Ancient Greece clad in 80s-style leg warmers. Nothing about the movie makes sense, and I still have no idea why it was ever green lit. What’s not to love?🤷🏼‍♀️

When I was in college, my friends and I routinely (to no avail) tried to get our theatre department head to produce Xanadu. I didn't know anything about it, except that it was a musical on roller skates. Um, yes, please!

Predator is a great time if you like genre mashup movies led by beefy men! And YES, Sunset Boulevard is a perfect reference to the original shots of Harry from inside the pool!

It was such a well-written script. I checked, and the only award it won was a Satellite Award for Kilmer. I really feel like the quality of the script is slept on.

I don't think there has ever been a more successful Hollywood redemption story than RDJ. He was always talented, but to go from being a complete pariah in Hollywood to winning an Oscar last year, it was so wonderful to see!
