Thanks for editing this! Before I watch it, I just have to make sure you have this movie on your radar: "All That Jazz"! That's the Bob Fosse movie more than any I'm dying to see a reaction for! (There's also "Lenny" with Dustin Hoffman playing Lenny Bruce, great. And "Star 80" about the true crime tragedy of Dorothy Stratton. Both of those are incredible movies). (But "All That Jazz".....mind- blowing and dazzling!). He only directed five movies!

I agree with you that the Godfather/Coppola's work stands apart, but something you said made me realize why Fosse one the Oscar. It was the combination of masterful shots and choreography that added a level of difficulty Godfather didn't have. Another element was that Cabaret wasn't made like an old school musical. All the musical numbers were in the Kit Kat Club and illuminated the story. Mein Herr tells you everything you need to know about Sally before she ever says a word.

I think ultimately The Godfather is superior however, I am really glad this was recognized. Godfather 2 winning best director two years later is the right choice.

Are you going to do a YouTube version of A History Of Violence

You mention how could any actor do this show after and not be compared. You’d be shocked to see the revival in the 90s. Alan cumming created an entirely new bread of EMCEE. he’s now kinda the blueprint for other productions. And Natasha Richardson is a beautiful sally. There’s no recording of Natasha in the role. But there is a proshot on YouTube of Alan doing the roll in London I think. Def a must watch for yourself.

I did this show when I was 16 as Sally and truly to this day it’s my favorite I’ve done. At 16 I def didn’t appreciate the material enough. I think the message is as important as ever that it’s irresponsible to think that just because politics may not affect you directly doesn’t mean it won’t affect the world around you or you indirectly and doesn’t mean it’s not important. The way it’s written to have the musical numbers be diegetic and comment on the scene instead of the musical numbers being weaved into the dialogue was genius and really makes you feel a part of the club and the story (especially in the stage production it’s very effective) great watch. I would love to see yall dive into more classic musicals like this down the road.

Oh and Joel Grey (Broadway royalty also originated the wizard in Wicked on bway) he is the father of Jennifer Grey who you may know from Dirty Dancing and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Fun fact is that he was 82 years old when he came out as a gay man ❤️
