This is one of my favorite episodes and yet also the Sandra Day O’Connor bit drives me up a wall because Sandra Day O’Connor was from Texas and Arizona and she went to high school in El Paso, all of which is bordering on common knowledge and at the very least, not hard to find out. If you’re going to pick a real famous person, it’s kind of obnoxious not to get it at least close to reality. That aside, the fashion show is one of my favorite things ever. Emily is having so much fun 🤣.

You recognize the actress that played Francie from Maisel she was one of Susie’s relatives. In between shooting Gilmore episodes, the WB had Chad Michael Murray, doing many things because they were determined to make him a leading man on something.

Oh and also, the girl who sits with Rory at the end played the youngest child on The Nanny! She was a lot shorter then :)

This was one of those lovely “warm bath” episodes, where the story is very engaging but where nothing hurts our feelings. Even the bits with Paris making herself vulnerable, or Rory fighting back at the headmaster, still feel like an episode where there aren’t going to be harsh consequences. 💜 Rewatching with you, I have no memory of the beats or timeline of the Paris/Rory relationship, so it was nice to see this moment between them.

30 years later and I am still scarred by the mother-daughter fashion show experience.

Kelly Bishop (Emily) was a very talented professional ballet and ballroom dancer in her younger years. She studied with the best and was at the top of her game! She danced with the parents of Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy, and Mark Ballas, professional dancers on Dancing With the Stars! I had heard of her from my grandmother who was a dance teacher, although she still went by her real name, Carol Bishop, back then. She changed it when she started working on Broadway. She spent many years acting and dancing in the theatre before getting into movies and TV. I love seeing Kelly and Lauren having so much fun with that scene, and Lauren has said it's one of her favorites of the whole series!

Such a fun episode, with excellent, witty dialogue. And Joe, I'm with you regarding Duran Duran; "A View to a Kill", "Save a Prayer", "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World" are masterful.

Dido catching strays too. I mostly remember her from the intro song to the (in retrospect pretty terrible but loved it as a kid) show Roswell.

I do feel like Rory should have already learned the lesson about grades not being enough to get into Harvard. Though of course needing extracurriculars is different from more specifically needing to have a social group this stuffy school approves of. But then it's pretty weird that this sorority that apparently goes back decades that's historically been made up of the top students in the school is going to get in serious trouble for their regular initiation ritual...

Maybe it's an urban legend at Chilton that Sandra Day O'Connor went there... I know that wasn't the intent but that's how I'll remember it lol

Joy M

I don’t recall the music. Probably just elevator/instrumental.

Allison O

I just recently read her new memoir and it was so interesting. Not spoiler safe for the guys until they’ve finished the series but really good.

The Rory is a loaner plot line makes sense when you think about Columbine

My husband bought it for me for Valentine's Day! I can't wait to crack it open, but I know that once I start reading it, I won't be able to put it down! My husband reads crazy fast... an average of a book a day on his Kindle! I'd much rather curl up with a blanket and my kitties, and read from a book, but I get more done if I listen to it, lol! Plus, I'm much less likely to fall asleep that way! Have you read any of Lauren Graham's books? She's such a great writer, so funny and super smart!

Headmaster Charleston turned Lorelai's meeting into her providing free labor for the school masterly.

This is a good episode on how much pressure Paris puts on everything she does. And how much work she puts herself through.

Peter

For being as resistant to the idea of modeling as Emily was... she really enjoyed herself.

Peter

This episode is so twisted because Emily sees what an amazing event planner Lorelai is, as manager of the inn. Seeing how skilled and competent she is at her job. And decides to make it about the life she gave up.

Both the actress who plays Francie (Emily Bergl) and the one who plays the leader of the Boosters, Eva (Brenda Strong), were stars of the hit series Desperate Housewives. It's a long series but if you ever get around to it, I am sure you both would love it. It's similar to Gilmore Girls with the small-town, quirky neighbors vibe, but add in some murder, mysteries, and hilarious drama.

I enjoyed the episode overall, but most of the individual components drove me nuts. The first lunch scene where no-one actually eats anything before the bell rings, the sacred initiation ritual that requires informing the candidate's mother, and apparently has gone 100 years without getting busted for trespass. I think it's the inconsistent tone of the show that gets me, it swings from super-serious to West End farce from episode to episode...and often within the same episode. But I'm also aware that's part of the show's appeal, and thus that I'm probably over-thinking it all, just like a certain Paris character.... :D

That was MADELINE ZIMA ?? I didn't know that ! That is why she looked so familiar to me!!

Did you skip ep 6? It's not in the Gilmore Girls collection here on Patreon
