I would be happy with either Santos as Vinick as actual president.

D Gyre

Vinick is definitely one of my favorite characters on the show, and like most of them, an idealized version of what would be good in real life.

Yannick Denis-Trudel

Even though it's dramatized for TV purposes, the events are very realistic in their outcome. Hoynes flaming down with the womanizing opens the door to Santos for his surge. Now you can evidently see Texas going his way, and many latino populated states as well. The real battle is then with Russel before arriving to the convention. On Vinick's side, even Santos called his primary run "a coronation" to reporters, so we could assume he's going to be the nominee even before the convention lurks in the horizon. We will see some Vinick for sure!

Jeff

Lots of people aren't fans of next week's episode, but I always found it interesting and memorable. Then after that are three excellent episodes to end the season, and season seven then takes you places you could never imagine while it still remains grounded in realism. You guys are gonna love this.

D Gyre

There does seem to be some chance the story is exaggerated or perhaps even not true? Santos has a line about the staffer being paid for the story, and the public getting what it wants even if we don't give it to them. That seems to imply he thinks this isn't true? Like maybe Hoynes never would have taken a gamble on a serious run if there was still these skeletons that could potentially come out? But its much more realistic that there would be others, and we do have the CJ lines previously. So I've never been very sure either way, but even if its exaggerated/not true, it is his past choices and behaviors that make it believable to the public, I'm not defending that at all. These episodes will keep delivering and keep delivering. We told you to buckle up before, and now you see why. This ride doesn't stop until the show does. Enjoy these episodes, especially these ones right now. you're not quite at the end of the season, its not the final stretch yet, but you're still in the ending run of great episodes, it's honestly my favorite point of the show, because there's still a lot of good stuff left, no episodes I would skip or not enjoy, but not close enough to hit that end of the show period to start being a little sad that it's ending, so you can really just languish in these episodes and enjoy them.

Holy cow, I forgot how good that episode was. I remembered the endorsement story from the title but forgot about how it all played out. The look on Josh's face at the very end! "Oh shit, we're actually in this now." They do a really great job of raising the stakes throughout the episode. It kinda creeps up on you. Donna is so great in this episode, and it won't be the last time. And hello Bram!

Michael Bennett

There's a run of episodes next season that are just slam dunk after slam dunk after slam dunk, it's unbelievably good.

Youtalkingtome

You bring up a good point: Santos does say the story might not even be true. I guess we can see moving forward if Hoynes makes a denial of this one.

Youtalkingtome

Me too! What a world to live in: An American presidential election where both candidates are actually qualified.

D Gyre

I think its still solid, and fits well with keeping the non-election side interesting.

Sly_Budlong

I love your reactions to every single episode I watch and this one is no exception! 😁 I'm not gonna lie though, this episode pisses me off after a certain Humanized Orange made it in the white house after having endless amount of campaign ending scandals and still being where he is! Grrrrr, it makes me so mad I wanna cry 😭

Yannick Denis-Trudel

I don't think Santos has doubt about the reality of the event... but the fact that it pops out at this precise moment is what he refers to by his "paid for by dime tabloïd papers", IMO

Pam Nail

My second favorite episode of the season (behind the season finale) and #23 for the series overall. I love everything about this episode. Perhaps especially what a great moment this is for Donna -- who yes, does indeed accidentally help Santos win California. Santos's story about the kids is so great, and something about that nod he gives at the end of it cracks me up.

Cristy

Bram is here! Love that we still have the walk and talks on the campaign. "She couldn’t have shaken him awake?" Lol, Kevin, I did think the same thing. I love that Will has such confidence in Donna and her abilities and she knocked it out of the park. I agree I want more Vinick, not gonna lie he's my fave candidate. I've got to say I feel spoiled having both VP actors in the episode, I love them both.

Undocumented immigrants getting drivers' licenses being the big issue definitely feels quaint today. It is one of those poison pills though, where you have a policy that *sounds* unreasonable and unfair at a surface level ("why should someone who's not even here legally get a legal ID?") and only makes sense for somewhat complicated reasons (as you guys laid out). Similar to the debate over needle-sharing programs in that way. "We cured polio." Yeah, except the couple of countries that still have cases and we first planted distrust in vaccination efforts by using them as a front for the op to kill Bin Laden, then just now torched all our funding for it.

dys

If it really wasn't true Hoynes would be denying it to his last breath, not suspending his campaign.

dys

Trying to think of when the last time that even happened was. Compared to what we have now I'd take a Romney or McCain presidency in a heartbeat, so I guess 2008 or 2012 even though I have a lot of problems with both (not that I don't have my issues with Obama's presidency too). Romney especially I have sour grapes for as a Masshole over how he slashed a bunch of spending on social programs at the end of his MA governorship that he knew would be immediately undone just to signal a pivot to the right for the 2008 GOP primary. Vinick reminds me more of recent MA governor Charlie Baker, moderate and competent Republican from a deep blue state. I would love to see Baker run for president honestly.

dys

I can usually name my top 5 episodes of my favorite shows but knowing like this specific episode is your 23rd favorite is something else! :D

Pam Nail

It helps that I made a Tumblr page about a decade ago where I ranked them all. :P (westwingranked.tumblr, com) But I could probably rattle off my top 20 without looking.

Weird Magic

Originally airing on March 9, 2005, 'La Palabra' is Episode 18 of Season 6 of The West Wing. It is the 129th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.2, placing it as the #7 ranked episode of this season and #52 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Youtalkingtome

In a perfect world right? This is why we can escape to this show, because even though the issues are complicated, it's much more likely to work out here than in the real world.

Tessa

This one of the times I wish there was slightly more focus on the white house still, just because every time I watch this episode, with Full Disclosure in the back of my mind, I wish we would've gotten to see CJ's reaction to Hoynes being accused of sexual misconduct by another woman. It's exactly what she warned him would happen, and it comes as a surprise to everyone else but I doubt she was surprised at anything except maybe the timing. I really would've liked to see more of that in this episode

Rich H

I've said before that Trump has accomplished one thing that I didn't think was possible: he's made democrats miss George Bush

Youtalkingtome

That's a great point. I hope we get some discussion of Hoynes leaving the race and it being down to 2 candidates for the nomination in the WH. I would still love to get CJ's reaction or take.

dys

Assuming you're talking about George W and not his dad, at least for first term Trump it was a tossup. He didn't start wars that got something like a million people killed, didn't start the unlawful detention and torture of people at Guantanamo and various CIA blacksites (didn't close those either, but neither did Obama, and for all Trump's talk of "loading up Gitmo with bad dudes" it had a far smaller population of prisoners than at its peak in the Bush admin). Now of course he's unleashed and we have no idea where this is headed but there is nothing to check him. But for me at least Trump's first term did not actually make me miss George W. Bush.
