- First, a PSA for next week -- keep watching through the end credits for the next episode. - So we're back to Goofy Town, not that we strayed too far from it last episode (until Darla pulled out those guns LMAO). This is another one of the least loved episodes but I still enjoy it. And not just the robot/demon element, but the charmingly outdated computer stuff ("I'm jacked in!") cracks me up. We also get to meet a cool new character -- hey there, Ms. Calendar! - I don't think most people remembered this episode enough to make the Ultron connection when that movie came out. But I imagine loads of reactors make the connection the other way around. - [rot13 for spoilers] V arire ernyvmrq vg hagvy ynfg jrrx, ohg Wraal Pnyraqne fubjf hc VZZRQVNGRYL nsgre gur rcvfbqr jurer Natry naq Ohssl fgneg trggvat ebznagvp. I didn’t make the old train connection until watching the show on reaction channels. Even many Buffy fans didn’t make the connection because the season one episodes are rarely seen. The WB didn’t become a nationwide network until halfway through season two of Buffy and I don’t believe this was one of the episodes. they reran after that when they replayed season one for the people who had missed it. The first home media release only had a handful of season one episodes.

I love how surprised y'all get with how casually dark the show gets. I think it's my favorite part of these reactions so far 😄. That and the simple fact that y'all just enjoying everything...

I mean... sure... you start to recognize story styles that Joss incorporates through multiple IPs. The same thing happens when you watch Sorkin.

Laura Room

You said it right the 2nd time. Think of it rhyming with the aurora borealis. And he was pretty much plucked off the street while walking his dog, and totally for his looks.

For David Boreanaz, not just smart with the shows he signed onto, but he has a great side hustle with Boreanaz house (Bojack Horseman fans will get this joke). This Rupert we like. I'm noting your Scooby-Doo reference here for... no particular reason. Okay I will not abide this Independence Day slander! I adore that movie. Most of what Emmerich has done since then is hot garbage, ESPECIALLY the sequel, but Independence Day is big dumb one-dimensional fun in the absolute best way. The dumb fun is perfectly paced, the one-dimensional characters are perfectly acted with just the right amount of sincerity, the visuals are bombastic as hell but still feel grounded in a way Emmerich forgot how to do after, and it's one of my favorite original film scores ever.

Fans always rate this one so low, but I think it has a lot of good dialogue and Alyson Hannigan is really strong. I think the guy playing the squirrely kid Dave did a good job too. Slice of life from mid-90s internet world; how quaint all that "cyberspeak" is now! But it really was new and foreboding.

it's like bore-ee-ann-ehz. or bore-ay-on-ehz. those are the ways i've heard it.

I first watched Buffy start to finish (other than half-watching a handful of episodes here and there on TV during its run) between the first Avengers movie and Age of Ultron, around 2013-2014, mainly because of how much I loved later Whedon works like Firefly, that first Avengers movie, and Dollhouse (sortof, loved a lot of Dollhouse but don't think it ever got as good as the best of Buffy or as consistently good as Firefly). So it wasn't that much later that I saw Age of Ultron but I don't think I connected it to this episode before now. rot13 spoilers: Wraal Pnyraqne'f qrngu jnf fb gentvp, gur svefg gvzr V ernyvmrq guvf fubj jbhyq unir fgnxrf gung znggrerq.

If this is a low point for the show then I'm excited to see when it's "good" because I've enjoyed every episode so far.

Look I'm not knocking you for liking Independence Day. Helped Will Smith become a star. I love Goldblum always. I just think I'm allergic to Roland Emmerich movies. I think The Patriot is the only one I really care for.

Sorkin definitely repeats dialogue. I'm just shocked at how similar the plot of this is to Age of Ultron.

Not one of my favourite episodes, but I actually love the cold open to this one. Whoever played the Italian monk really put their all into it; I like the rain-esque sound effect they put over the monster being banished to the book, which also looked really cool; and the transition between closing the box and opening the box was smooth! I also like the subversion of the subversion that Fritz was so obviously evil that he couldn't be evil, but then he was just evil lol. Edit: I totally forgot about the hilarious ending to this one! I think this episode rates higher in my opinion than I thought it did haha!

Oh man. I don't think I rewatched this one since I first watched Buffy, and that wasn't that long ago - sometime around 2010. This episode was already a charmingly nostalgic period piece then; I didn't expect that the next 15 years would somehow see me completely loop around to fully & unironically agreeing with Giles. I mean, my version of his speech would probably use more words like "affordances" instead of "smell" but his is better

This episode. Every time i watch it i can't help but love it. It's so cringe, so funny, way too silly to be a truly bad episode. A few fun facts about this episode, Robia LaMorte (who plays Ms Calendar), is the same age as Charisma Carpenter (cordelia)! Also, they show buffy's school profile on the computers twice, and each had a different birth date for her (first as Oct 25, 1980, then June 5, 1979). Both are different than her official canon birthdate of January 19, 1981 Lastly, i always think of this Bojack Horseman episode when people talk at length about David Boreanaz 😂 (40 second clip) https://youtu.be/OTSGS8ilLiM?si=qoNpEsqeqZYdU3jx

It's impossible to convey tone over internet, so I hope you know that I know you weren't knocking me for liking that movie. The way I said "Okay I will not abide this Independence Day slander" was just me having some fun with how I said I really liked the movie when you guys didn't.

Hadn't watched this one for years, considering the general ranking of the episode. I can't help but wonder now if it got its bad rap because it was so pessimistic about new technology, while the general culture wasn't. Sure, it sounds like the scaremongering that accompanied all new innovation (tv got so much of it), but from where I sit now the general theme looks... quite prescient. Fun fact about Miss Calendar: she toured with Prince! She was one half of Diamond & Pearl, from the similarly named album. The name Boreanaz is originally Italian, which hints at how to pronounce it.

IDoDabble

I had the same experience. But come to think of it, it's not really surprising: there have been people warning for the stuff that ended up happening since... well before this episode even aired.

IDoDabble

Did anyone ever say 'jacked in'? Modems, 'the net', all that is familiar, but the jack thing... I mean, jacks didn't factor into connections anyway, from what I remember

Kevin L

Haha, well fortunately Fritz was portrayed as a creepy nutjob from his very first scene. :)

Tommy Ross

I never saw Miss Calendar as being "mean" to Giles. More playful than anything. I mean, if anything, they were both being rude to each other. He literally referred to her job as being the science of the "idiot box"

Youtalkingtome

The guy playing the monk was going hard! That's so funny. This episode was a ton of fun. I'm just really enjoying the tone and the really fun situations.
