For anyone looking to watch along the movie is on YouTube for free.

oh man I only remember one scene from watching this with my parents LMAOOO but as a brief violinist it's an awesome movie!

Clare Manion

What an interesting movie - and yes, comparing it to the 'watch' storyline in Pulp Fiction is perfect! Some of the historical bits also remind me of Amadeus (about Mozart) and Immortal Beloved (about Beethoven) - especially with the child prodigy rehearsing. Are you familiar with either of those?

OMG! I love, love, LOVE this movie. It's my favorite movie that nobody has heard of. Well chosen. For the sake of the story, I don't care that Sam Jackson steals her. The guy that won the auction had no appreciation for her other than the value to his collection. She needed someone that would love her.

Thank you for showing them this! A hidden masterpiece that will always be one of my favorite movies. Also... let's be best friends.

Is there ANYTHING in childhood more awkward than watching a sex scene in a movie with your parents sitting there?

UnKay

Yes, my mom screaming "FAST FORWARD" through the whole scene until my dad realizes we are there😅😅😅 (probably why I remember them so vividly) 😳😭

Thanks Stephanie for the call on this hidden gem of a movie! Being from Montréal, I always had a special relationship with this movie. For once, Montréal is being shown as itself, not as old Paris or London, and even nowadays as New York. Even though the director François Giraud didn't do that many movies, him and cinematographer Alain Dostie did such a great job with camera work (the many timelapses for example, and the gypsys having the camera rigged to them as they were playing to go from Germany to England) And I also want to shout out the violinist Joshua Bell that recorded all of the solos throughout the movie (well mixed so we couldn't feel it wasn't truly being played on camera) If you want to see him in another setting, he did busking in Washington subway as an experiment to see if people would realize that a virtuoso was playing for them https://youtu.be/hnOPu0_YWhw?si=MLBgKXZKbSeHqm0A

Oh yeah, I don't know if you seen that the Chinese lady that was bidding in the auction house was Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey's Anatomy) ;-)

Oh this is amazing! I can't believe this isn't a bigger movie. I wonder if distribution was an issue. Like if a bigger studio had bought this film. Either way I'm so unbelievably glad it exists

Well, I'm so glad you two enjoyed this one. It's been one of my favorites for years and I've noticed that not a lot of people have watched it or even heard of it, which I always thought was a shame. If nothing else, it's a great opportunity to see a relatively calm Samuel L Jackson. He's almost never like that. LOL Two little bits of trivia, Don McKellar, the man who played Evan, the dude who was doing the tests on the violin and helped Morritz steal it, also co-wrote the script with the director. Christoph Koncz, the little boy who played Kaspar, the orphan, is actually a violinist who became fairly well known after appearing in this movie. He's now 37 and has moved on to conducting.
