Yup, you nailed it -- she was pregnant! I think you'll actually appreciate the new dynamic that they introduce while she's in jury duty: the show obviously had some time to think about what they would do during this time, and I think they carry it out very well - hope you agree! Also, completely off topic -- PLEASE watch modern family! It is SO well-crafted and fantastic, and the dialogue is so so so sharp. I laugh out loud at almost every episode, which is rare, and each character truly shines.

Also, on modern family - it isn't a show that takes its time to settle in, or falls off during the last few seasons - every. single. season. rocks. Hope you eventually add it to the rotation!

We almost started Modern Family when we did The Good Place. It was down to those 2. It will definitely be one of our replacement sitcoms in the future.

Glad I read the comments before watching — I would have assumed we’d be following Jess to jury duty for an episode or two, and then been blindsided when she wasn’t there next week. Good eye!

One last thing: the next episode is a great Winston episode! I feel like this season is the first time they really start thinking about him as his own main character with more self-motivated storylines -- looking forward to it!!

Talking of Jury Duty, the show of that name was possibly the best thing I watched in the last couple of years. Absolutely bananas, but in the best possible way. It's basically a moral obstacle course that turns out to be a real balm for your soul. Only six episodes I think, but I believe they shot a second series before the first was shown, thus preserving the central hidden conceit.

Second season still in post-production AFAIK. (I wouldn't be surprised if they had 100,000 hours of footage from the first season that they had to edit!)
