getting called a cocksucker in the context of deadwood is like a "how's it going"

Wu one of my faves. Been careful not to refer to Al as Swidgen here before but now I can. :)

I've been waiting for this episode. I thought it happened much sooner in the season. I love how Al puts up with Wu in the beginning until he realizes it was HIS dope that was stolen. Al's whole demeanor changes. COCK-SUCKA!

I love how Al finally got someone smarter than his usual team to bounce ideas off of in Titus Welliver's character. It gives us as the audience a change to hear more of Al's thought process out loud, and that really paid off with the conundrum over the opium thieves.

This episode was written by Bryan McDonald, but David Milch wrote that unforgettable scene between Reverend and Seth + Sol. Milch notoriously known in the TV industry for (re)writing stuff as it goes. Ray McKinnon (who played Reverend) had to be tracked down by the producer to come in on the set, learn the lines and immediately film the scene. There were many instances where actors on the show where Milch was showrunner or writer had to learn their lines almost before shooting the scene. That actually was one of the big reasons why Deadwood was canceled too early - HBO producers couldn't keep up with Milch constantly rewriting scenes and adding new ones, so the budget would get bigger and bigger. He is a great writer, and his shows (NYPD Blue, Deadwood, Luck) always had an excellent ensembles, but he also was a difficult person to work with. A genius but not an easy character at all.

Brad Dourif, who is mostly retired from acting, appeared this week in an episode of The Pitt on Max. It stars his daughter, Fiona, who made her acting debut as one of the background whores on Deadwood.

I wish more studios would take a risk. Is it worth the gamble? Maybe. When it's great, as this is, it stands the test of time.

It was the “tit licker” Al talked about before they wouldn’t let in

You know I love you guys, but I don’t know if it’s new or I’m just noticing it more - but your mics are picking up a lot of lip smacking noises and kind of despise it as have a pretty severe case of misophonia. I try and cut the volume down but if I get it low enough then can’t hear your comments. Just know there’s a way to adjust it - microphone placement, or whatever. I’ll obviously survive and not going anywhere - just wanted to mention it.

Also “Who?” “Wu?” “No WHO, you ignorant f-ing (racist slur).” “Cock-a-suckah!!!” “Yeah, glad I thought you that fucking word.” Might be my favorite bit of writing in season 1. Also yes, I guess c-sucker could be considered homophobic in a way, but it’s really more directed at whoever they are being pieces of shit thieving bastards. I similarly have my own campaign I’m working on to slowly bring the c-word back….by absolutely only ever using it to describe the worst kind of guy (never a woman). It’s a process lol

Hell, nobody in the US really knew Ian McShane even before he was cast in this. I’m an insane Anglophile and o barely knew him from his UK TV series, “Lovejoy.” Not to mention Dayton Collie (Utter), who went on to be on Sons of Anarchy for years as well as other shows. Robin Weigart, obviously, who I saw on David Mamet’s “The Unit”. Also of course Jim Beaver, who would be on many shows………and *ahem* a couple coming up along the way that might surprise how well they were cast before bigger things came their way.

I agree, but we also should remember that HBO back then wasn't on the level it is now post-GOT (which brought it so much profit), and HBO had other projects besides Deadwood that also required attention and money, so from their POV it made sense that they prefered to deal with someone more predictable as showrunner.

He's amazing. Son's of Anarchy is a show that I've wanted to watch forever. I know some details about it but not a ton. Always excited to see familiar faces on the show!
