Buffy1 12

If you look at this season as a whole you actually see Buffy went through most of the traditional heroes journey this season. She was called to action, in the first episode by Giles, refused the call to action due to the desire to keep her original life, was forced into taking action to save willow and Jesse, then throughout this season we see her train and grow from a teenager with the powers of a slayer and slowly become an amateur hero/slayer. Finally she is forced to confront her enemy and makes a traditional descent into a cave or the underworld, finally she dies and is reborn, and thus by conquering death is a true hero and is able to slay her enemy. Not the complete hero’s journey but Joss Whedon was definitely influenced by the traditional heroic cycle this season.

In mild defense of Xander using the word "mate"... this is a guy who recently 1) was possessed by a hyena 2) had a praying mantis try to mate with him.

Your mention of costumes was well timed. The classic Buffy costume is absolutely that white dress with the leather jacket. She was gorgeous.

SMG and Alyson Hannigan are both actors where, when they’re crying, it makes ME want to cry. They’re both so amazing at being sincerely human and vulnerable. And they can go between those things and excellent comedic acting like *that*. Buffy and The West Wing are the two shows that have shocked me with how committed they were to good comedy. It’s the number one thing I tell people about each of them — that, and how the jaunty title “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” makes it sound way less deep and well-written than it is.

Just yesterday I saw S1 outtakes video on YT, Aly & Sarah doing multiple takes of Willow's crying scene, and damn if they don't nail it every time. So, so strong, those two.

This episode pushed the trauma to a new level for the first season you see people get upset but it wasn’t any deep emotion to go with the lighter tone of the show where in this one everyone seemed to feel it more deeply. I do think the Master confrontation was a bit anticlimactic but they didn’t have much of a stunts budget yet.

For me, the emotional core of the show grows from this episode. The phenomenal acting by smg and alyson hannigan show the potential of what this show can be. Idk if this is true, but ive heard through the years that for most (but not all) seasons of buffy, they didn't know if they were gonna be renewed while writing, so they tried to write endings that would be a decent series finale, wrapping up what they can but still leaving openings for more story Finally, i wanted to share this song by Jenny Owen Youngs that she wrote about this episode. It should be noted that it was written and recorded shortly after the 2016 election https://youtu.be/1Lb24DvOya4?si=rb7UNnet8JEEl55B

Oh also, i freaking LOVE Marc Metcalfe (unsure of spelling) as the master. You can tell he had the most fun with that role. He made the master genuinely scary, but also kind of a huge diva 😂 the perfect combo for a villain imo. I recently saw a picture of marc Metcalfe and the actor who played the anointed one 25 years later (so from the past few years), and it's wild how andrew j ferchland just looks exactly the same, only stretched out to adult size

So glad you got to this episode. You were talking about serialization. This was the time when shows like this were starting to become more serialized, moving away from the weekly episodes being very self-contained. I think it's not a spoiler to say that Buffy was one of the first to play with the long arc running next to the weekly one, and season 2 is what starts it off for real. Both in the storytelling and thematically. Imo that's what eventually makes it so strong. And, in a way, new.

I'm pumped for season 2! I enjoyed every episode of this season, even the "silly" ones. The fun they were having make this show really bleeds through the screen

It's a solid structure to follow. Especially in fantasy and science fiction. I'm a sucker for it personally

This is a beautiful episode, definitely sets the tone for season 2. I can't even put into words how excited I am for you to get into the rest of the show! Also, Joe, how dare you accuse Giles of drinking coffee; that was a very British cup of tea that fell on the floor, thank you very much!

Sorry for multiple comments, but i just realized that this video isn't a spoiler anymore! Since the Buffy Prom event was also kind of celebration of the 90s in general, it's a tradition for everyone who showed up in cosplay as buffy in her iconic white dress/leather jacket to come and all do the macarena as a group 😂 (the other recent posts on my Instagram contain spoilery images so just dont scroll) https://www.instagram.com/reel/DIFw-aVxVB5/?igsh=MWNrMXQ4dXUzOXEzZA==

What show got cancelled mid-season to give Buffy its big break?
