Note: We were watching this when a guy cut my internet cable (always call before you dig. Seriously. There have been ads for decades. It's literally free). So, do not be alarmed that we have a costume change in the middle of the movie. You're not crazy, and we're not divas. It was recorded over 2 days.

"You're not crazy and we're not divas." Love it. I'm so excited for this Aussie film!!!!! The school is actually in my home state.

Roland

A brilliant movie.

Michael Soukup

The brilliant Peter Weir!!! More please!

This was SO different from the other films of his we have watched. Am I a complete weirdo for drawing thematic comparisons between this and Deliverance?

Lola Lirola

Yay, one of my childhood favorites! You can see where Sofia Coppola got her languid, hazy sense of dread from.

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed and appreciated this. I think the main reason this film had detractors was the ambiguity. People assumed it was a mystery that should have a clear solution. But the ambiguity is the point. And in the pre-internet years, there was no way to check the veracity of the story, so it was assumed that it had some basis in fact. The author of the book refused to address the question, keeping people guessing, but there's no historical evidence of any similar event happening. I have to say that in all the years I've been familiar with this movie, no one has ever made a comparison with "Deliverance"! And I think it's a valid comparison! Bravo, Kevin. I also have to say that your magical clothing change was timed perfectly, right at the moment the girls start heading up the rock. It would have been even better if you had reappeared dressed as swans. I was planning on waiting until next month to pick the next Peter Weir movie, but I'm not sure if I can wait that long.

I definitely agree - this was a beautiful film with a lot of interesting ambiguities. And many echos of Jane Eyre and The Little Princess (are there any *happy* boarding school stories from this period?). A small detail I wanted to mention: Miranda's special-ness was reflected in her costume. Of all the girls, it looked like her dress incorporated far more lace, which would have been a status symbol at the time. Plus, music note of the day (pun very much intended): the tragic-sounding orchestral piece repeated several times throughout is Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb Major, Mvnt II. Really beautiful. (Is this of any interest to you guys? If not, I can leave off on the classical music notes.)

Okay, good! I was worried the Deliverance comparison was a reach, but the fatalism of the film wrapped around these girls wandering off on their own into a place they couldn't possibly tame or understand felt like a real driving force of the story. And bravo to Peter Weir for making such an ominous film that created so much tension and dread in what was largely a mundane set of events as they unfolded. It is a terrific movie.

Roland

Strictly Ballroom should go on your to-do list, another awesome Aussie classic.

Roland

I don't think there's enough evidence to date to confirm that a) we're not crazy b) you're not divas

Youtalkingtome

Ah! Good catch on Miranda's attire. I completely missed it. And definitely please include all musical information! There is always a reason a piece of music is chosen, and sometimes there are clues to the story in those choices.

Youtalkingtome

That's honestly not a bad comparison. I've only seen one of her films and it did have a certain "dreaminess" to it.

There are definitely some non-Australian characters, but you also have to appreciate that Australian accents are traditionally more class-based than regional, particularly at this time. The super simplified version is that the more they sound like a stereotypical Australian, the lower their class. Conversely, the more you resemble the English upper class, the higher your social standing.

Youtalkingtome

Thank you! That definitely helps clarify some of the film, especially the significance that class plays into characters' decision making.

Bronwyn

Peter weir filmed some scenes through muslin and lace to create the dreamlike haze quality. Would love if you guys watched Lion with dev Patel doing a very respectable Australian accent
