That time Buffy caught a triple homicide in the form of shoulder bops on the dance floor lol. Had Angel, Willow, & Xander hurting 😆😭...

Don't worry, it never stops being schlocky and campy. We shouldn't overstate the shift in the kind of show it becomes after season 1, it's just it does start having more serialized storytelling (but still plenty of fun monster of the week episodes) and the stakes (lol) start feeling more real. Even this first episode is showing that, still plenty of camp but the events of the finale have real consequences for Buffy's mental state.

I don’t think it’s out of character for Xander to threaten Buffy. He just spent the last few days expecting to see his warm, caring, engaged, protective friend, and all he’s gotten is someone who has been completely unpredictable and self-absorbed. I think enough time had passed from charged dance they had at the Bronze for him to realize that he was just being manipulated and used by this supposed friend who weaponized his attraction to her. He felt betrayed and abandoned by Buffy, and the contempt he sensed from her as she insisted she go to the Bronze alone made him realize that she really, really wasn’t who he thought she was. By contrast, Willow is oldest friend and his safe place, and he recognized that she’s irreplaceable. Xander is emotional and impulsive and uncensored, and the fear/pain/anxiety/betrayal all found a target in Buffy. In that moment, I think he would have threatened anyone who stood between him and Willow’s rescue, ridiculously overmatched or not, and the bitka who had been hurtful all week was right there to lash out at.

I don't think Xander's threat to Buffy was necessarily out of character. I mean it was sudden and aggressive, so I can see it being jarring(it even seem to make Buffy snap out of it a bit that she didn't even fight back against his words), but Xander has been shown being protective of Willow before. I don't think there's even been really a question about whether or not Xander very much cares about Willow, even if the question remains whether or not he may or may not have romantic feelings for her(he immediately went to attack the zookeeper in The Pack ep as soon as he became unpossessed and saw Willow in his clutches, then at the end of the ep said, "Nobody hurts my Willow" as he hugged her. There's also the fan theory that the reason Xander has nightmares about Nazis is because Willow's Jewish and the fear is more about her than himself). We even see him sitting down holding Willow in his arms as he's watched Buffy fighting the vamps. Add on the fact that he's VERY pissed at Buffy who been disrespecting the both of them the past couple of days now, (he firmly stepped in Willow's defense when Buffy said something very disrespectful in response to Willow earlier in the episode)... He just got his ass kicked by vampires and they just kidnapped his best friend. Xander already lost one friend to vampires, and Willow, his best friend, is about to be sacrificed, and he's blaming Buffy (which is fair considering her dangerously impulsive & rogue behavior allowed for it to happen because she wouldn't listen to anybody, especially the very people who has been by her side, including Xander who's literally the reason she's even breathing). The threat was probably empty. Unless Xander decided to grab a gun for his vengeance, his chances of actually killing Buffy were slim to none. They both knew it. I think he was making his point to her through his rage in that moment due to the overall situation, and it showed that despite his romantic feelings for Buffy, it didn't seem to overshadow his care for Willow, who does seem to mean more to him based on their friendship alone, as she should considering they've seem to been friend their whole lives(at least Kindergarten)...

Okay, i have a headcanon that at the beginning of the episode, buffy was one her way to meet up with xander and willow, but when she saw that there was chemistry happening, she stopped and watched bc she really wants this for willow. I fully imagine that when the vampire showed up, she rolled her eyes and went "ugh," before going to slay him. Further evidence for this i think is in her dream where giles becomes the master - at the beginning when they sit down on the couch, xander and willow seamlessly and wordlessly each take out a snack, look at it, and toss them to each other to trade. To me, this goes to show how perfectly in sync they are in her head. She just really wants them to get together so willow would be happy. Also, Cibo Matto rules, you should check them out! The singer was also in the Gorillaz occasionally as the voice of noodle (specifically in the song 19-2000)

Was actively using the Christian Cross* as a torture device ever raised at the time? Seems like it could easily have been an issue. *itself a reminder of brutal torture and death of course.

"Miniature Tennis".....did Xander just invent PickleBall? 🤩

Kevin saying "It's got, like, a little happy ending" RIGHT as half a skull appears on the screen is peak accidental comedy! Season two definitely improves on just about everything from season one - the writing, directing, comedy, drama, stunts, fight choreography, SFX. It keeps the same vibe, but it's more polished and mature (and, yes, bigger budget!). I think the only thing that dramatically changed was the music, which went from an 80s style synth soundtrack to something more orchestral; you'll notice more strings and less keyboard from now on. Personally, I think that's a huge improvement, it makes the show far less dated.

Love your reactions! Any. Chance you'll do more than one episode a weak? I lost count how many times I've watched this show and still can't wait for the next ep lol

Getting extra episodes on the schedule isn't really the hard part, but getting them edited is the killer. We really do have a full plate on that end. We have one editor helping us with 4 shows. Joe and I edit everything else ourselves. We just don't have the extra time.

I've always seen that as standard vampire fare. Crosses and holy water - at some point in time the mythology got steeped in Christian symbolism.

I guess we just didn't expect that line to come out of his mouth. I loved how the tone was darker straight out the gate
