What a fantastic film! Agreed, the writing was excellent, and that last line was just perfect. I thought "Lazlo" as a codename was an interesting choice. I wonder if it was a purposeful reference to Casablanca or just coincidence. In college, I studied Russian language & literature (as a minor) and yes, the Cold War/Soviet era is littered with stories like this. Pasternak, who wrote Dr. Zhivago, comes to mind. I know this was set in East Germany, but still. Very similar. Also - "Hugo Steiglitz" - ha! Seconded.

I thought it was slightly funny the "i hope he does x y z" cause all your ideas were very in line with American movies. It's a very different type of narrative and emotional satisfaction. Not a criticism, just an observation. Those ideas don't generally happen in German movies that aren't blockbusters. Realistically most people probably wouldn't meet up with the Stasi man, cause what do you even say? Years of trauma and intimacy that this absolute stranger knows about, that this stranger spied on. This man who helped you and saved you but also was part of the system you were fighting and writing against every day. It's so layered. This film has been one of my absolute favourites for years.
