Tommy Carcetti is an interesting character in this episode because he reminds us of the Walrus and the Carpenter in "Through the looking Glass". In the poem the Walrus and the Carpenter are friends who go down to the beach to collect Oysters. They play a trick on the Oysters to convince them to get captured for the feast. As they collect the Oysters and the Oysters complain about what's being done to them, the Carpenter doesn't care. The Walrus, on the other hand, weeps for the Oysters. But the Walrus trapped and ate a lot more than the Carpenter does. So, for all his weeping and complaining, he still did the dirt and he still did the deed.

Carcetti looks like a freaking saint compared to most of our politicians these days. He'd have my vote for sure!

I agree. Genuinely feeling bad for doing something he doesn't like is a huge leap from our current mess.

That's a good parable to compare here. Carcetti feels terrible about screwing over Tony, but he's still going to do it.

Everyone makes a point of condemning Bunny and the whole Hamsterdam experiment/strategy, but also everyone (especially Royce) can't take their eyes off of the stack of letters of praise. Also note that Burrell uses almost the same language to describe the authors of said bundle to the Mayor as Major Colman used when handing them over to him -- adding only the descriptive "voters." Is it just me, or did Rawls seem generally happier than we've ever seen him before when he was sitting in that bar? I mean, we've seen him happy before but only in a kind of menacing way because he just successfully screwed someone else over. Stringer Bell has become a man without a country. In season 1 D'Angelo was explaining chess to Bodie and Wallace, describing Avon as the obvious King and Stringer as the Queen, with all of the moves and power. But now the Queen is trapped and seems to be considering whether sacrificing the King will allow him to survive in the long run. The end is nigh, folks. Remember that so far as anyone knew, they were shooting the very last episodes of the series. Season 3 was aired in the fall of 2004, but HBO held back on renewing the show for low ratings, despite almost universal critical acclaim. We ended up waiting a full 2 years for season 4 to appear in late September 2006.

The saga of them trying to wire tap the burners really related to me when This show was on because I worked for a phone company and it was pretty common for Bernard like characters to show up with a trash bag full of burners and roll of cash for me to load up the phones with new numbers and minutes. I coded them all in case the cops were ever interested but as far as I know they never were. It was also pretty common for there to be healthy tips in the wad of cash in with the burners. Victims assistance charities got some healthy donations from what was left since I certainly wasn’t keeping it.

As much as the Hamsterdam idea didn’t work Baltimore city did try a couple years ago the exact same approach with kids begging for money on street corners and getting violent with motorists. They moved them to advertised designated areas where people who wanted to give them money would know to go and it did drastically cut down on incidents of drivers being attacked.

"damn, calvin - you know i got the bingo tonight" is a fantastic line read that lives rent free in my head.

I want a spin off series of Lester: Undercover.

Every so often, I rewatch that CompStat scene just to enjoy Rawls's reactions. "I'm all ears Bunny." "Well, I moved em off the corners." "Goddammit!!!" Never fails to make me laugh out loud. 😂

Lester was a natural! And Caroline needs to be his partner. "Damn, Calvin, you know I got bingo tonight."

There are so many great monologues in the Wire but Bunny's speech to Carver about the difference between policing and war may be my favorite.
