Yeaaaahh. I remember also thinking, “Well, Stannis needs to just die now! I’m over his entire deal.” As you said, it feels like a lot of this season was just building. It’s built to some crazy/impactfult things already, and will continue to do so, but it does mean that this is a point in the show when it’s reaaally hard to talk about these episodes without somehow giving spoilers.

BTW, the "Dance of the Dragons" that Shereen was reading about is the time depicted in House of the Dragons, if you ever want to watch it in the future.

Yeah... this episode is one of the worst to watch of the entire series. Stannis is really gone. I already wasn't a fan of his arc, but he fully lost me.

Note the irony of Meryn calling Renly a "boyf**ker" (for having consensual age-appropriate same-sex relationships) and then immediately revealing himself to be a full-fledged violent pedo (but it's fine cause it's girls????). And yes, the Stannis scene is one of the worst of the entire series - so difficult to watch. And now that we've been comparing Davos to Odysseus, Stannis is now Agamemnon. Which... yeah

I am of the seemingly increasingly unpopular opinion that Stannis's wife is not worse than he is - given that she is a woman in this society and has been completely indoctrinated in a way that Stannis never has been - led to believe she is a failure as a woman because of her stillborn sons (I know Stannis didn't, but the society did) - and she STILL managed to be the only one who showed any humanity in that awful scene. But mothers still seem to be held to a higher standard than fathers for literally the same acts. Both Shireen AND her mother deserved far better.

Season 5 is probably my least favourite, for similar reasons to what you were saying at the start of the video. It's mostly build up, but it happens so slowly and gradually that it almost feels like the show is stalling for time. In the back half of the series there are seasons that move slowly and seasons that move almost too fast, I feel like if they could've averaged out the pace it would've made for a more balanced show.

Very tough episode to watch/rewatch. Fortunately, it is saved by the final scene in Meereen where hope, spectacular and care for other people (Missandei and Dany, Jorah, Tyrion saving Missandei, Drogon saving his Mother...) prevailed.

Well I'm almost caught up now. :) Doran Martell is one of my favorite characters on the show. We've only seen him a handful of times, and he's rocked it in every scene. He's one of the few people in power who understands what ruling is supposed to be. Ser Bronn once told Meryn Trant that he was better at beating little girls than fighting men. Unfortunately, he meant that literally. Stannis... rewatching that is so horrible. In the scene where he last talks to Shireen, the first thing you see is her holding the stag against a background of flames. And then you see Stannis' face, and listen to him try to talk himself into doing what he has to do. I've led a privileged life, but I believe the worst thing we can do is convince ourselves to hurt the people we love.
