There folks here who probably know a lot more but I’ll throw out some Doris and Rock info 😀. Doris was a singer with one of the big bands. She started in movies in the 40’s and then in the mid-50’s she became a staple of rom coms like this one. She was very wholesome and was one of the biggest box office stars of the 60’s. In the 70’s, she ended up on tv as her husband stole all of her money. Rock showed up in the early 50’s in at least three Douglas Sirk movies. He also received an Oscar nomination for Giant (his only one). In the 60’s he starred in some adventure films and at least one well-thought-of Twilight Zone-like sci-fi called Seconds. In the 70’s he moved to tv with a very popular cop/detective show. AIDS started to make itself known at the end of the 70’s and early 80’s 😭 And Rock who was beloved by fans were shocked when they saw him emaciated and then he died. Ronald Reagan who was president never had acknowledged AIDS until Rock Hudson. This is my memory but I didn’t verify if that was factually correct or not. I think Rock and Doris made 3 films together. Again others who are smarter can correct or fill in information. PS I think this was Doris’ only Oscar nomination. RomComs don’t often get recognized.

Thanks, Michael! Rock and Doris were both SO good in this. I'm glad they got to work together a few times.

Thank you for watching! I'm so glad you guys had a good time with this one. The writing is super fun, the costumes and sets are phenomenal, and the three principal actors are perfect for those roles. Although I agree, it probably wouldn't be made today, and for good reason. However, in 2003, there was a spoof made of Pillow Talk called 'Down With Love' starring Rene Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, and if you thought some things about Pillow Talk were wild... Moving on. Yes, Hudson & Day did three movies together - all romantic comedies that have a very similar feel to this. The other two are called "Lover Come Back" and "Send Me No Flowers." Both also include Tony Randall, who is always a lot of fun. (He also has a cameo in Down With Love, which was a nice touch.) And yeah, I could totally see how Pillow Talk and similar films from the period would be a big influence on shows like Mad Men...although I've only ever seen the first episode. I don't remember why I didn't keep up with it. I'll have to try it out again. Anyway - thanks again and glad you enjoyed it! P.S. The piano at the end is called a "player piano" or "pianola."

The Doris Day romcom was such a genre that it was its own Columbia House subscription service advertised on TV back in the day. It was pretty incredible that she alternated between romcoms and thrillers in the 50s and 60s.

Doris Day got nominated for best actress for this and Thelma Ritter who played Alma got one of her six supporting actress nominations for this. She never won but still holds the record for the most nominations in that category.

Thanks for the heads up about avalanche one of the few 70s disaster movies I haven’t seen that is a genre that is a favorite of mine and you should definitely do the airport franchise sometimes in your franchise schedule

Glad to rewatch it with you! Both Rock and Doris are so great. Fun fact, they tried to remake this movie in 2003 (Down with Love) with Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. It was also set in the 60s, but kinda failed to capture the charm of the time which made outdated aspects of it even more noticeble.

This was cute but I'm not sure I fully feel the romance here. Rock Hudson's character was so manipulative how do you trust him after he did all that!? Then again he is soooo dreamy I'd probably forgive him anything. I mean that scene in the bathtub. That is one very tall man. Anoter Rock Hudson film I watched last year was Written on the Wind. A great melodrama where he plays a much more sympathetic character.
