Not sure about the Coldplay song but "Safe and Sound" by Taylor Swift (featuring The Civil Wars) from The Hunger Games was nominated for a few awards including two Grammys and a Golden Globe. She won one Grammy for best song written for visual media. Edit: You're right, Coldplay was nominated in the same Grammy category for this movie but lost.

This is one of the better examples I can think of where a sequel manages to have its cake and eat it too--it still plays the hits (i.e., the games) while also finding a way to expand things and keep them fresh. It seems like a small, simple thing, but I bet it was super hard to come up with a way to get Katniss and Peeta back in the arena in a way that doesn't seem too contrived. If the author hadn't nailed that the whole story wouldn't have worked.

So glad you guys are enjoying the series and are seeing it all the way through! One of my favourite moments is the scene where Peeta tells the capitol audience there’s a baby because their response is so crazy yet so parallel to real life. Real human kids fighting for their lives? Give it to me in augmented HD with surround sound! An unborn baby in danger? Absolutely not, unacceptable, cancel everything. It’s all just so painfully familiar. Also I loved Peeta painting the picture of Rue during the assessment. It reminds Katniss of everything that’s already been taken from them and that they have nothing left to lose. And Finnick’s sass mixed with genuine moments of emotion and vulnerability were gorgeous to watch. Thanks so much for continuing the series. Looking forward to the next one!

I would argue that it all started not when she saved Peeta, or even Rue, but when she volunteered as tribute to save Prim. In 74 years, no one from District 12 had volunteered. It's the poorest, dirtiest, most overlooked district; it's not *meant* to have volunteers, because if District 12 can have that kind of strength then any district can. It's interesting watching Plutarch on rewatches, he's very, very careful about how he talks about Katniss to Snow: "I agree she should die, but in the right way, at the right time" - Snow hears 'we should kill her after she's turned on her supposed friends', but what he really means (in my view, anyway) is 'she either dies as a martyr for the revolution, or peacefully in her sleep when she's old'. Also, "the more allies she betrays, the more friends she kills, the more she reveals her true self" - Plutarch knows she'll reveal her 'true self' by refusing to kill anyone outside of self-defence. I'm so glad you're seeing this series through! I'd argue it's more important to watch it now in 2025 than it was back in 2012. I remember it feeling like a warning even back then, but unfortunately not enough of us heeded it.

I'm guessing the first one did well on the YouTube numbers side of things? 😂 I'll be watching this with y'all tomorrow!

That's a really good point about Katniss's volunteering. The writing is so fantastic, because her being an unwilling hero doesn't feel trope-ish, but more that the districts were already a powder-keg ready to blow, and all it took was Katniss's small acts of defiance to set it all off.

I loved this, I forgot most of this movie. It was better than I remembered! Probably better than the first one, imho. Which I wouldn't have said before rewatching it. I think the last ones are even more interesting, though! I hope you continue with them when you have a chance, but that goes without saying.

Thank you for being here with us! It is weird to think how close to home these movies hit. I can't wait to see how this franchise ends.

I think this one is an improvement on the first. The first one is still amazing, they just upped everything from the production to the stakes, while expanding upon this already great premise.

Actress who plays Mags was Lynn Cohen. She played Golda Meir (Israel Prime Minister) in "Munich" by Steven Spielberg. Big filmo also. Unfortunately, she died in February 2020 at the age of 86. I haven't read the books but I've read some bits of Mags's backstory, she's incredible <3

I'm glad you're watching all of these. Despite how popular the films were, I always thought they were better than they really got credit for. It always seemed like many people thought they were so successful because they were part of the YA film craze that seemed to start with Twilight. I'm sure that was a part of it but they were actually pretty good movies. Francis Lawrence, the dude who directed this and the next two movies of the series, has a new film coming in September that I'm super excited for. The Long Walk is an adaptation of an early, short novel by Stephen King and stars Philip Seymour Hoffman's kid, Cooper Hoffman.

Youtalkingtome

Yes! I heard about the adaptation but I didn't know it was him. One of the only Richard Bachman titles I've read of his.

"I don't think she has the hots for anybody" THIS! haha exactly! She is just a teen girl, trying to survive a game she did not want to play. I hate the movie focused so much on this "triangle" thing. Her and Gale are not together. He is just constantly pressuring her. And she cares for him from the years of friendship and gets confused. Peeta likes her but gives her space. And that-is-it. From that, you can notice the moments where Katniss shows affection towards Peeta is way more natural and spontaneous than the ones with Gale—like she doesn’t even realize how deeply she cares for him. But you can tell, especially during this game, that her feelings for Peeta are actually there. She just needs time. And the revolution and games are not giving her that time to figure this out, so she keeps going back and forth. She is just a kid.
