Buffy2 3

Ah, the introduction of Spike and Dru, who have been described (by Whedon I believe) as the vampire Sid and Nancy. Fun times. Joyce only caught glimpses of Buffy in action through a small hole in the door. She didn't see Buffy actually dust a vamp from her angle so Buffy's secret identity is still a secret from her mother. Good call on the camparison to Die Hard. It's where the episode title comes from.

Now that it's not spoilery, I *love* how gutsy this episode is. A complete reset of what the show is. They take all the things that would have become a slog if they'd had to sustain them for seven seasons, and... revamp (sorry! the pun was right there) - Vampires are not ponderous ancient creatures, they're rock-'n'-roll. - Buffy's mom is no longer an obstacle who has to be kept in the dark. - The Annoying one was a good idea on paper, but a snooze on the show, gone! - Buffy/Giles are not the only one who knows about the Hellmouth. Now we have a completely new board to play on! (PS: I love that you love Cordelia too, she's so much fun. Some people get irritated with her, but Charisma Carpenter just nails the self-absorbed foolery so well, I love a love-to-hate antagonist)

- RIP Annoying One. You were neither Big nor Bad. :P It took everything within me not to get snarky in the comments every time they tried to sell him as this huge threat. He's such a nothingburger of a villain. - Buffy's mom still doesn't know about vampires. It was dark. All she saw was "something wrong with their faces." The closest she came to seeing Buffy slay one of them was when she was peering through the hole in the door, so she didn't see the actual dusting. - I looooooove this episode. Definitely my favorite of the episodes we've seen so far. The introduction of Spike and Dru is so iconic, and I love that -- from the moment they come on screen -- they are INSTANTLY more interesting than any of those minions hovering around the Anointed One. And Spike dusting that turtleneck-wearing kid is such a breath of fresh air. - [rot13 for spoilers] V ernyyl ybir gur frevrf bs unaqbssf guvf frnfba jura vg pbzrf gb gur Ovt Onq. That was my takeaway as well: this episode feels like a complete reset on the show, and there is MUCH more to Principal Snyder than we know. I can't wait!

thank you! getting to watch both school hard and wire 3x11 with y'all is somewhat improving an otherwise shitty (literally) night of colonoscopy prep.

FYI - Drucilla is played by Juliet Landau, the daughter of the great Martin Landau.

I love how much this episode upends and expands the universe. Finding out that Snyder and the police know more than they're letting on gives me chills every time! RIP Anointed One - as fun as you were in season 1, you really only belonged in season 1. And the biggest shock twist: Cordelia *voluntarily* spends her time with Buffy and co. Also - and I apologise, because once you know this it's something you'll always know going forward - Spike is insidiously disgusting with how he talks, especially about Buffy. If you couple Xander finding the tampon in Buffy's purse with the "I smell the blood of a nice, ripe girl" line...yeah...he's gross. Again, I apologise.

There's so much window into a full new world here, with Snyder knowing about the Hellmouth, more slayer lore, Spike knowing Angel (and referring to a common past, which puzzles Xander)... Spike is throwing around more references here, btw: 'I chop her into messes' is from Othello. I forgot how much this episode plays like a standalone, sort of pilot - very much like a film, but in a different way than the standalones in S01. Yeah, it does truly kick off the season.

This is the episode that marks the transition to the show the fans know, and love. You can really see the difference to the first season with the quality of the casting, special effects, writing, directing, and acting. Even the costuming takes a step up as they have a better sense of who the characters are and how they should dress.
