Love the callbacks in this show. "You kill him?" "He's resting." Exact same exchange they had in Season 2 after Omar ambushed Mouzone. Also, I don't remember where I saw this pointed out, but Stringer spent his entire run on the show telling people to "lock that door", only to be trapped by a bunch of locked doors in the end.

First my favorite of the early Buffy episodes, now my overall favorite episode of The Wire (and one of the best episodes of TV full-stop). I commented on Game of Thrones' Purple Wedding episode about that being one of the most satisfying deaths in TV history, because that character is so evil and hateable and we'd wanted him to die for so long. Stringer's death is also right up there among the most satisfying IMO but for very different reasons; Stringer despite being objectively a bad guy is so charismatic that we love every moment he's on screen and don't want to lose him as a presence on the show, but his death is also the culmination of so much incredible character work and plotting over the last three seasons that it feels absolutely right here.

I love that final scene. Stringer tried his hardest to escape even up until the very end. Ultimately he couldn't do it--every door was sealed shut.

This is a top 3 Wire episode for me.

The African American guy in the black suit advising the mayor is real life former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke who did try to drop crime by cutting back on the war on drugs which got him national attention and an article calling him the most dangerous leader in America. He is now one of the owners of the Orioles.

"Sullivan. Minor irritations" that's Dennis Lehane!

I think this is definitely a top episode of the series for me. One of the things David Simon wanted to comment on was the change in the drug culture from guys selling to survive or get rich to guys trying to make the biggest name for themselves no matter what, which is a whole deeper level of depressing because the money is almost meaningless to them at that point. Stringer and Prop Joe definitely represented the old way and they both lost either with the loss of life or business and now it’s just guys with no rules no morality that are left.

Of course if an important such as the Death of Stringer Bell occurs in a season it will happen not in the final but in the penultimate episode -- Note that E11 was written by novelist George Pelecanos, Simon's hit man. Pelecanos ALWAYS wrote the episode just before the finale and it ALWAYS meant that big stuff was going down. Pelecanos wrote S01E12 (Cleaning Up) -- Wallace dies. S02E11 (Bad Dreams) -- Frank Sobatka dies. S03E11 (Middle Ground) -- Stringer Bell dies. S04E12 (That's Got His Own) -- No Spoilers. S05E09 (Late Editions) -- No Spoilers

Oh man, okay now we have to be on the lookout for the penultimate episodes. That's exciting. This show reminds me of GOT more and more

I think this might be my favorite episode so far. Definitely best episode of S3 but overall it's very close
