I first saw this in the late 70s on HBO when I was twelve years old, and it blew my mind. It was the first time I realized that a filmmaker can create a mood and emotions through visual and auditory means. Peter Weir had such a unique style and vision, unlike anything I'd seen before. A couple of things at the end: the mask he took was of his own face. I assume he grabbed the artifacts so that he would have some physical evidence of what he's seen and experienced. The ending itself is left ambiguous; I always thought he was witnessing the wave in real time, but others have said it was a vision that hasn't yet happened. I'm glad you liked this one. I have only one more Peter Weir film for you, and it's going to be quite a departure from these first two. It's so interesting to see his evolution as a filmmaker.

I never even heard of this movie. But I could certainly use more Peter Weir in my life.

Richard Chamberlain starred in two mini series that have modern remakes that are more well-known. He starred in the original Shogun, and he was the original Jason Bourne

Both excellent watches. The Bourne Identity is much closer to the Ludlum book. Chamberlain is perhaps best well-known for The Thorn Birds, which I never watched, but I remember being absolutely HUGE at the time.

Not sure if you caught this thread within the movie but Chamberlain's character's south american ancestry is important in the story. The wall paintings Charlie leads him to show south americans came to australia and met the aboriginal people. The mask that looked so much like him was of one of those people. The Mulkurul that have the prophetic dreams and brought the relic stones.
