George Hearst was patriarch to the Hearst fortune. His son was newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. I assume you've seen Citizen Kane or else I woulda seen a reaction from you :) When you edit or rewatch this one check out Mr. W's eyes and micro facial expressions when he first meets Farnum. He sizes him up immediately and enlists him in his plots in a way where Farnum has no choice but to help him. Cy at least has a choice and of course he chooses $$$. Like you guys said, bad time for Al to be down and out.

I'll add Sweet Smell of Success for another representation of a William Randolph Hearst-type character. Starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. Excellent movie.

There are incredible trivia on IMDb about this episode: "The little boy who talks in front of the new house on his way to Oregon to plant apples, was a special favor for the boy who was dying. He wanted to be an actor and his parents contacted David Milch, who created that small scene for him. He saw the episode on a tape he was sent, but died just three days before it aired. Milch talks about this on the DVD commentary". The boy's name was Damon Weber, you can google about him, there's a really sad story about how he died. He was only 16 years old. RIP And good for David Milch for making Damon's last wish come true. He also gave a lot of people a job hiring them to be the part of the Deadwood's crew. Geri Jewell who played Jewel has cerebral palsy in real life, and she got cast in Deadwood after David Milch met her at drugstore where they both were standing in line for painkillers. Which in a way makes Al Swearengen hiring Jewel to protect her from life's hardships an interesting meta writing. Fascinating!

I knew what was coming at the end, so I muted the show and just watched your reactions. That was the most entertaining three minutes I've seen in a long time! I love the introduction of historical figures like George Hearst into this story. He struck it rich as a silver miner, and 160 years later the family is still involved with Hearst Communications, which is involved in tons of companies including ESPN and The San Francisco Chronicle. I still remember when his great-granddaughter, Patty Hearst, was kidnapped in 1974.

If it hasn't been mentioned before, you need to watch 'John From Cincinnati' next. It was the next David Milch show on HBO, the dialogue is a similar style and equally fantastic. Also its only 1 season so its a quick watch.

Some random casting trivia, Powers Boothe's daughter Parisse plays one of Cy's working girls named Tess. Brad Dourif's daughter Fiona plays one of Maddie's girls.
