Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure was Keanu Reeves first big break, and it came out the same year as this movie.

The Parenthood series with Lauren Graham is not related to this movie. There was a tv series based on this movie that came out right after. They recast Joaquin Phoenix’s role with Leonardo DiCaprio.

The TV show that aired 10-15 years ago was based on the movie, and the basic family structure is the same - parents with their 4 grown kids, and their families - but the characters, and the plot of the series are different. Some of the issues have parallels with the movie but they take them in different directions because of the nature of a network TV series vs a feature film.

keanu's monologue about letting any butt-reaming asshole be a parent was formative when i watched this at 10. and even then, i could see the wisdom and the truth of it. the tv show was great. the characters had different names, but the general family structure and some loose character outlines carried over. lauren graham was a divorced mom of two, like dianne wiest's character. peter krause was the analog to gil - he and his wife had two kids, one with some different needs emerging as the show starts. erika christiansen was the other daughter - a type-a lawyer (kind of more akin to rick moranis than his wife) with a house husband and kid. and dax shepard was the peter pan son, sort of a parallel to larry with a newly-discovered kid. craig t. nelson and bonnie bedelia played their parents. set in the bay area instead of missouri. six feet under is also great.

I love this movie! And I loved the series. Similar family dynamic and family structure with 2 sons and 2 daughters and their partners and children. It was the first show that I ever saw dive into autism, which was really powerful. Among the many stars including Craig T Nelson and Bonnie Bedelia, is Mae Whitman who went onto other roles, but most of us met her as the president's daughter in Independence Day. Great characters that I thoroughly enjoyed spending an hour a week with.

I'm glad you guys loved this one. It's been a favorite of mine for years. The show was fine. Same basic family dynamic. I never really connected with any of the characters on it. It was an entertaining enough show for the most part, though. Now if neither one of you have watched Six Feet Under, that's a show I would really recommend you check out. It's wonderful. I think you both would get a lot of out it.

After now, re-watching the movie, I am picking up where they got various story beats for season one of the Lauren Graham version, even though they do change it up a bit.

I didn't realise they came out the same year. I love seeing Keanu Reeves on the channel, although the guys have probably seen it a reaction to Bill and Ted's would be so much fun.

One of my favourite reactions from you guys! I love this movie and, even though it's from 1989, the themes are still so relevant today. Joaquin is his birth name but he went by Leaf for a while until reverting back to his original name in his teens. I love Diane Wiest in this so much, she has more patience than a saint. One of the best things about Steve Martin is his physical comedy and this is on display here. I always loved him with John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles the best.

What a wonderful movie! I had never heard of it before, but I'm so glad it won the poll. There are so many things -- the opening daydream is an inspired choice, the little girl playing Patty looks so much like my niece (who behaves more like Justin, but never mind), Diane Wiest is phenomenal, and Grandma's roller coaster analogy is everything. I loved it. I nearly cried my eyes out at the end. "The best what-not-to-do playbook and the best what-to-do..." Absolutely. Couldn't agree more. In many ways, this role for Steve Martin feels like a prequel to his character in the "Father of the Bride" movies --- which I love. They're a comfort/guilty pleasure of mine. I know they're fluff, but I love them anyway. Something about Steve Martin always reminds me of my dad. I don't know why exactly, they don't look that much alike. But still. Anyway... a fantastic Friday-night watch. Thank you :)

“He said he loved me….” “They say that…..then they come” Is one of my favorite slip in (no pun intended) dirty jokes in a family film ever lol

JVTrickypants

Amazing movie that I'm really glad you watched....but definitely should also check out The Hunt for the Wilderpeople" as it is also a classic (well, new classic).

I also love the bit of realism with Julie's mom....six months, etc....but whatever they want she wants to give it to them, that's the best she can do.

Low-key maybe Ron Howard’s best movie? It’s not the obvious choice, but I definitely enjoy it a lot more than most of the others. My favorite is Grandma, who’s played by Helen Shaw. She did this movie, only her third, at 93 years old after spending 70 years in the theatre, where apparently she learned scene theft at an elite level.

Diane Wiest was so good in that role. And yes, I agree with her that Todd is not long for the married life.

Youtalkingtome

That's a strong cast for a network series. I have wondered if we should watch Six Feet Under, but I hear it is pretty grim (for a rewatch, which is what viewers would ultimately be doing with us).

Youtalkingtome

Selfishly, I really do want to watch Hunt for the Wilderpeople. We will find a way to work it in at some point.

Youtalkingtome

I think you are on to something about Steve Martin. I think the incredible earnestness he is able to convey as a father who is struggling is really exceptional.

Youtalkingtome

Steve Martin was a great lead in this for sure, but I really found myself being drawn into the underrated performances of Diane Wiest and Jason Robards.

Youtalkingtome

For sure, they'd definitely have to rework the show for a more contemporary audience (the shock at finding a vibrator, the stigma of a child in therapy, etc.). But thematically, this movie really holds up well.

Youtalkingtome

I have thought about Six Feet Under (we have never seen it), but everything I read about it says it is REALLY a downer, so I'm not sure how people would feel about re-watching it with us. (I loved Marriage Story and Manchester By the Sea, but I will never put myself through watching them again).

Youtalkingtome

I should look into it. I love the idea of a show that more realistically looks at families of children with autism (I don't know why it's so triggering for me, but "autism as a superpower" stories tend to enrage me).

Erin Mileur

Small detail but when Steve Martins character quits his job his boss has a picture of himself posed next to an extremely expensive car just wanted to point that out as a great little character detail put in their by the filmmakers that tells us what an a**hole boss Martin is dealing with and thanks four watching Parenthood great choice keep up it.

This is a great rewatchable movie. I watched it on vhs and cable as a kid and the vibrator and car accident scenes totally went over my head. As a native of St. Louis, MO, the movie is set in St. Louis but was filmed in Orlando, FL has not aged well.

Nick Stark

Once again thoroughly enjoyed watching a classic alongside you both. This film has always been one of my favorite Steve Martin films. The way this film portrays a families ups and downs is masterful. So glad you both enjoyed the journey.
