Great movie, great reaction, thanks guys. The song is so epic to this day (just ask the Stranger Things fans). I still can't watch that one scene with the horse, I remember my mum being mortified that they put that in a kid's movie lol. Looking forward to Bill and Ted but only when you have the time.

(I apologize for the length of this) Oh, guys -- I’m absolutely over the moon that you watched this movie! I must have been about 5 years old when I saw it for the first time (is that too young? probably), and have loved it ever since. I’m so, so glad you enjoyed it!   What I love most about this one is how it incorporates existentialist and absurdist philosophy. In particular, I feel like it closely echoes Albert Camus’ “Myth of Sisyphus.” I don’t know if you’re familiar, but it’s basically about resisting nihilism (i.e. the Nothing). It makes for an extremely ambitious message in a kids’ movie and they nailed it...Sorry, I feel like I'm constantly telling you to read things, but believe me, I really don't mean to assign homework. Orange juice and an egg -- Darlings, that's a hangover "cure." He's having a rough time too.  On Bastian’s mother’s name - I like to think it was intentionally obscured at the end so that each viewer could fill in whatever they wanted/needed to hear. A thoughtful sleight-of-hand on part of the filmmakers.   P.S. – I really loved the commentary – hilarious and thoughtful, as always. And yes, there are sequels, but um... I wouldn’t bother. And I say that as a fan.

Oh my god, how did we miss that it was a hangover cure. Of course! Oops! I have never read The Myth of Sisyphus," but I am VERY loosely aware of Camus's philosophy in a general sense (I read Caligula in a theater history course in college and there was some loose instruction around it). It's kind of the absurd notion that man seeks to attribute meaning to his life, and the world responding with nothing at all. I am sure I am oversimplifying, but Camus sort of called for man to fight back against nihilism, and consider Sisyphus proudly defiant against an uncaring universe. And I am definitely sure I butchered that.

Was 'Flight of the Navigator' on the list of 80's movies? If not, it should be on the list of must watch along with most of the rest of the list.

i've seen this probably 100 times since i was 6 years old and never realized that was gerald mcraney. so there's that. welcome, belatedly, to the trauma many of us experienced as children in the 80s (just one in a long list of "kids'" movies serving it up at the time). the mother's name was moon child. was the egg in the orange juice a laziness thing or a hangover thing? the rockbiter looking at his hands always gets me as much as artax. and "to the winch, wench!" is a very quotable line - especially while sailing.

Did anyone else own a giant rideable Falkor luck dragon plush toy?

I've always heard the egg thing was for hangovers, but honestly you could probably Google any random ingredients with "hangover cure" and find some results

- I think the mom's name is meant to be unintelligible; you can imagine what you want. But it's generally agreed to be "Moon Child." - The visual effects Oscar that year went to Temple of Doom. The other nominees were 2010 and Ghostbusters. - Limahl was the lead singer of Kajagoogoo, whose one hit was "Too Shy."

No but now I want one! I did have an Ewok toy and ET figurine though.

I seem to remember it is Moon Child in the book (which has a part 2 and... takes quite a different turn)

'Atreyu. Why do you look so sad?' I may be able to recite half of this movie and especially that scene.

If you listen to the song The Neverending Story it doesn't really have in intro or anything like that, it just goes straight into the musical theme that runs throughout the song and then at the end it just fades out to the same theme. So if you play the song as a loop it just keeps going endlessly with the same theme other than for the short fade in and out.

The Neverending Story is based on a German book of the same name that was written in 1979! I loved this movie as a kid but didn't know it was based on a book until maybe 2022? It's pretty good! There's actually 3 movies, but I've only seen the first 2, and i think only the first two have corresponding storylines in the book. Ive never seen the 3rd movie, and don't really plan to. Bht apparently jack black is in it as one of the bullies? Lol This story also makes good use of a common fantasy trope, which is that theres power in names. A lot of legends and myths also use this trope (stories about the Fae come to mind), and im always delighted to see it, as it's one of the classics :)

Welcome to the childhood trauma that is the Artax scene... It's right up there with "he can't see without his glasses". But don't google it if you don't know the quote, in case you watch it sometime...
