This episode is the first written by David Mills, David Simons first writing partner. They both had their first writing credit on the first episode of Homicide not fully adapted from David Simon’s true crime book. They cocreated The Corner docudrama adaptation of David Simons non fiction book for HBO but Mills got offered his own drug series Kingpin at the same time David Simon was creating the Wire. Kingpin got cancelled after 6 episodes.

Dominic West was filming 300 during Season 4 so they did what Fred MacMurray did with his sitcom for a decade and filmed all McNulty scenes over a weekend to be edited into episodes later to keep him as a presence on the show this season without the time commitment.

They establish one connection between the kids and characters we know this episode and gave another Easter Egg connection that was just for super fans and eagle eyed viewers for you to ponder during editing or future binges.

The debate gave me one of the annoyances of this being on HBO. Since this was HBO this show isn’t connected to an affiliate so they have to use fake TV stations all through the series instead of actual Baltimore channels like have been used for other Baltimore set productions. The idea that the mayoral debate was being shown on multiple stations was pretty funny normally local debates like that only end up on whatever channel is sponsoring the debate and are not well viewed.

You caught the shared line between Namond and Clay Davis, but I love the other parallel that shows up in this episode as well. Cutty's landscaping boss tells him if he can learn a little more Spanish, Cutty can start recruiting his own crew and they can get twice the clients. A few scenes later, Bubbles tells Sherrod if he can get better at math, he can start handling money on his own, get a second mobile depot, and they can cover twice the ground for their business.

I don't think there would be any point in Valchek bringing Royce's affair to Carcetti, there's no way Carcetti would make that accusation without way more of a smoking gun.

The majority of the kids that we see in this season are Michael, Namond, Randy, Duquan “Dukie”, Donut and Kanard. Randy’s last name is Wagstaff, the same as Cheese. The teacher leading the meeting was Grace, Cutty’s ex-girlfriend, who was introduced in season three.

I'm surprised you didn't recognise the woman who was, er, servicing Royce. They showed her in the office in the previous episode, and one of you pointed out the way they were looking at each other. She was also one of the people in Royce's camp watching the debate.
