My favorite movies: pre-9/11 camp with cartoonish characters My favorite tv shows: emotionally devastating "comedies" which will make people sob deeply at least a few times

Although, as someone whose mom was like a blue collar version of the mom in this movie, the ending makes me cry every single time. It really felt like they came up with the thesis and built the movie around it, but it works for me! I'll have time to watch the reaction in the morning

That was wild...A lot of ‘Fred’s performance reminds me of David Tennant at his most manic and then some. From the intro – Missing old video rental places – Right?! So much of the experience was about finding what you’re *not* looking for. You could be surprised by things in a way doesn’t really happen anymore. That’s a big part of why I love used book stores.

Youtalkingtome

Me. too! The internet is great and all that jazz, but I really miss being able to really browse through movie cases, books, etc. and discover what I wasn't searching for.

Rik Mayall, the guy who plays Fred, was a pretty big British comedian in the 80’s and 90’s. He starred in some huge sitcoms over there like The Young Ones and Bottom. He basically made an entire career out of playing over the top characters that you either loved or hated. LOL

Erica

Okay, so i mostly watched this movie as a young kid (we recorded it off tv so the tape had old commercials on it too). The fred bits resonated with me as a kid bc i thought he was hilarious, and the freeing of her inner child and learning to not be terrified of her mom resonate with me as an adult. I definitely feel lile the movie doesn't really know whether it's for kids or adults, which seems to be the kind of movie i liked as a kid lol Rik Mayall was a really popular English comedian who passed away about 10 years ago. The reason harry potter comes up when you search him is bc he was supposed to play peeves in the movie, ut they cut the character. My main takeaway from this movie is that you shouldn't apply logic to it, and it could honestly mean whatever you want it too :)

Pizza Hut used to give away this DVD for free with orders circa ~2002 ish, and I still have my copy! I was about 10 years old at the time, and I LOVED this movie and watched it more times than I can count. Rik Mayall is considered a pioneer of alt-comedy, and he was great in Blackadder and The Young Ones; both seminal Britcom classics that I highly recommend. TYO had really cool musical guests too, like Motorhead, Madness, Dexy's Midnight Runners, The Damned, etc. It was the first sitcom to be syndicated on MTV in 1985.

Curious to see more of his stuff. I haven't really seen a performance quite like this. Kind of like a live action cartoon

Youtalkingtome

The movie is definitely going back and forth between kids movie and adult comedy. That tonal shift really worked for me

I'm surprised people haven't mentioned Rik Mayall's leading role as the extreme Thatcherite politician Alan B'Stard, a wonderful spoof of everything that was terrible about the 1980s. (Think Gordon Gecko / Patrick Bateman as an unremoveable member of Congress). Brilliant clip below, featuring some very familiar faces.
