Thanks for doing this movie guys! It’s a favorite for me even though I’m not terribly into baseball 😅 And yea I think Dot threw the game. I agree that Kit was a bit too whiny but at the same time, I’m the younger sibling and can definitely see where she was coming from. There’s a lot of great trivia about this movie on IMDB if you guys are curious 👍

All the actors did their own stunts that huge bruise was real.

Yeah, Dottie didn’t drop it on purpose—that would just be bad storytelling, and lessen both Dottie, for betraying her team (and like, competition generally) AND Kit for not having earned it. That said, I do think she dropped it because she was a bit conflicted (not wanting to just destroy Kit), whereas Kit was 1000% trying to kill her in that moment. Either way, while I love this movie, I don’t like the ending. It’s not just that Kit wins—that’s fine—it’s that she wins by doing something absurdly stupid and immature.

Fun fact: In Madam Secretary, Tea Leoni's character threw out the first pitch at Mets game (and was very nervous about it). This was also the first pitch at an actual Mets game --although, for filming, it required 4 takes.

The woman who played Betty Spaghetti, who lost her husband in the war, is Tracy Reiner! She is the daughter of Penny Marshall and Rob Reiner! I didn't even know PM and RR were ever married until just recently! Tracy was also in the movie That Thing You Do! (1996), written and directed by Tom Hanks. Tracy played the movie star Anita in the beach movie 'Weekend at Party Pier' where the guys were acting as Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters! Love both of these movies so much! You guys didn't realize it, I'm sure, but during the credits, that was the REAL players from the AAPGBL playing baseball! Some of them were used throughout the last few scenes, especially at the Baseball Hall of Fame! Yes, they do have a section dedicated to all the women in the league! There are several parts of this movie that make me cry every time... Marla leaving her dad to go and play ball, Shirley not knowing how to read, Marla and Nelson getting married, Bob coming back from the war, and of course, the ending! All of the black and white pictures they paired with Madonna's song. Crazy enough, her song isn't even on the soundtrack! It was released as a single through Warner Bros., so contractually, they couldn't put it on the soundtrack! Recently, I've started adding to my vinyl collection, again... mostly movie soundtracks. WarGames (1983), E.T. (1982), Top Gun (1986), Top Gun: Maverick (2022), Six Pack (1982), Back to the Future (1985), Armageddon (1998), and both Dirty Dancing (1987) records, to name a few. Just feels like another piece of history that shouldn't be forgotten! So glad you guys finally got around to seeing this movie! It's surely not one to miss out on! Great reaction, guys! Thank you!

Speaking of Mickey Mantle if you have never seen it check out 61(2001) about the home run race between Mantle and Maris directed by Billy Crystal.

I recently learned that Penny Marshall & Rob Reiner were married too. (I was watching a SNL episode from 1975 hosted by Rob and he announced his wife Penny was there and I had to immediately look it up.) Tracy is Penny's daughter with her first husband, Michael Henry, but she was adopted by Rob after he married Penny in 1971.

I read through some of the trivia. Sounds like a lot of actresses were attached at one point or another to play Dottie (including Brooke Shields?), and Madonna was kind of a jerk to the locals during the shoot.

Yeah I just can't go with her consciously dropping the ball. This is a professional league. she already tried to walk away once, but she needed to finish it out, and she also still plans to be done after one season... and she's going to basically "throw" the final game just for kit? and would that even be a good thing? wouldn't kit want to earn it on her own merit? The cues we get at different points in the movie, and then her literally giving away kit's weaknesses and being shocked when she gets the hit.... she was trying to win. I do really like the idea though that was posted about her subconsciously being conflicted, so her focus and her drive isn't 1000% as way to reconcile the two possible endings? She didn't do it on purpose, but her confliction just didn't match kit's motivation, so on that play she lost. I mean if she wanted to throw the game wouldn't it be easier to just miss catching the ball?

Many of the women playing in the credits and the opening scene were veterans of the league. They found as many of the surviving players as they could to play factionalized versions of themselves. The league ran until 1954 and the movie was filmed in 1990. The youngest players in the league were in their 20s, meaning they would be in their late 50s to early 70s at time of filming. Even now, 33 years later, this is still one of my favorites.

So happy you guys did this movie because it's one of the best baseball movies out there. No matter how many times I watch it, there are so many moments that just make me cry. That telegram scene is just so....real. Having to play after that is unimaginable.

I think you're right that if Kit had lost the game it's very likely that their relationship never recovers from that and maybe Kit never does either. I do think she lost on purpose at the beginning of the film we see her advise the older brother to go easy on his younger brother and that's supposed to be the major clue that she pushes Kit to the brink but in that situation where she can decide whether or not to allow Kit to win she chooses to let her season have that victory. We also see Dottie take a collision from a bigger woman earlier in the film and she holds on no problem.

Impossible to imagine! This was a great baseball movie, I've been wanting to go to the batting cages all week!

I'm leaning that way too. I like that several people here have different opinions! The ambiguity is great
