Man, the early 90s was such a golden age for movies. Dances With Wolves, Field of Dreams, Ghost, Goodfellas, Thelma and Louise, Dead Poets Society, Silence of the Lambs, etc. It’s hard to think of a better 3-5 year period in cinema.

P.S. that bruise? was real

I always took it as fact that Dottie through the game for Kit's benefit. Which still bothers me. Despite that at the end, this movie is like a warm hug. A comfort movie up there with The Princess Bride. I was also a kid when this movie came out. and Kevin is right, it was a huge hit. Madonna's acting career is legendary for producing flop after flop with her in the leading role. I think this was her first genuine blockbuster. Most notably when she's playing a supporting character.

I love this movie! Tons of classic lines from Hanks, the scene with Betty’s telegram gets me every time, and Marla singing is probably my favorite bit -- it takes a lot of talent to sing that far off key :) Really enjoyed watching along with you guys too, since you know baseball and I...really, really don’t, lol. So it was fun to hear your comments on some of the finer points of what’s happening. And great catch with the Snow White apple reference! Also - music note: I don’t know if you caught it (it’s super brief) but in the final game when Kit’s pitching and we see close-ups of her, there’s almost like an old Western gunslinger theme on solo trumpet with a harmon mute (an accessory that gives it that ‘tin can’ sound). Really cool detail.

Huge props to director Penny Marshall. She also directed & EP'd Big, Awakenings, Jumping Jack Flash, Cinderella Man and the mind-bogglingly amazing TV show United States of Tara. The entire Marshall clan is just so talented.

Geena Davis might have "retired" from acting, but she has certainly been busy! Her Geena Davis Institute studies representation in media for women and minorities. They release a comprehensive report each year looking at the number of male vs female protagonists, time speaking onscreen, and the results are... illuminating, to say the least. They also did a study where they saw when there's 75/25 men to women onscreen, audiences get the impression that it's 50/50, and when there's actually 50/50, people believe there's too many women and they're dominating the landscape... https://geenadavisinstitute.org/research/geena-davis-institute-impact-study/

Yes! The actors were actually playing in many of the scenes, and I read that bruise took an entire month to disappear. 😣

Women being relegated to second -class sports is not uncommon. When the women's football (soccer) league started, it was a huge success and audiences flocked. Until, in 1921, the men's Federation got together in London and decided to ban the women's league. Of course, it wasn't an official prohibition, just... They fined stadiums that hosted women's matches, they prohibited women's entrance to gymns and training spaces, kicked out any men who helped them, and they stopped broadcasting or reporting on women's matches. And so, you have the narrative that it was just "unsuccessful" and that women's leagues just "never seem to attract enough public".

But I love this movie for how well it portrays women discovering their freedom: learning to read, finding friendships, finding love, writing songs, raising their standards, traveling the country, playing sports... Occupying spaces and opportunities that they had never been given before!

-the music was scored by none other than Hans Zimmer...

She was also competitive in archery for some time. She almost made the Olympic team!

I completely missed the musical cue during the last game! That's so cool! The telegram was rough, but for some reason, Shirley not being able to read her name really hit me hard. The desperation and horror in her face just killed me.

Yeah, I may be misremembering (I never saw any of them), but I think Madonna got on that 1990's erotic thriller train for a while (wasn't there one with Willem DaFoe? I think I remember a trailer).

Another actor on the Racine team was Janet Jones. She is the wife of Wayne Gretzky. She had a few roles in the 80’s and early 90’s. She played a gymnast in the 1986 movie American Anthem (I was 9 years old and obsessed with gymnastics at the time). It’s a terrible movie 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. She also played the love interest of Matt Dillon in The Flamingo Kid, another Garry Marshall movie, 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Two more series you should watch, Stargate: SG1 for more Don Davis, and The Expanse for more David Strathairn (and more Jared Harris for that matter). I'm curious why Bill Pullman got an "and" credit in this, this was before the likes of Sleepless in Seattle, Casper, Independence Day, really anything I thought he got big recognition for. I know you guys don't like Independence Day but man he is so great in that (and wasted in the terrible garbage fire sequel). Tom Hanks was a few days short of 38 when this movie came out, which does seem young to be as old and done as he is here, and I'm 38 myself so I bristle at considering that "old", but that's definitely retirement age in baseball terms. If you want more Tom Hanks, America's Dad, being unlikable then watch Cloud Atlas but part of his being unlikable there is his parts just not being written, directed, or acted that well. I kinda think only Jim Broadbent came out of that movie leaving an impression of "wow, he was really great in that".

Cloud Atlas is one we really need to check out. I remember when it came out and hearing very mixed things about it. It makes me wanna see it even more!
