Fred Astaire was actually considered a spoiler for best supporting actor since the Oscars had previously awarded Helen Hayes best supporting actress for Airport and Shelley Winters For Poseidon adventure of course De Niro deserved that win for Godfather two

Jonathan

This is my first Fred Astaire movie other than towering inferno too

Was The Bandwagon on your list of upcoming films? That’s Fred too paired with the great Cyd Charisse. There is on dance number from that film that is just sublime of Fred and Cyd.

Just one more comment to add some love to Ginger Rogers—dancer, comedienne, and Oscar-winner. The old saw applies—she did everything Fred did but backward and in heals. She made some delightful comedies in the 30’s and 40’s winning an Oscar for a nice melodrama called Kitty Foyle. Stage Door might be her most famous but I’m sure some other Ginger fans can chime in with favorites.

And Fred did make a film with the great, lovely, wonderful Audrey Hepburn. It’s previously been noted that more Audrey is needed in your watchlist 😀. Just sayin’ 🤷‍♂️

This movie is so charming – I couldn’t help but smile the whole way through! (Just what I needed today, so thank you!) I really wish we still made things like this. Especially with all the dancing. La La Land tried, but in my opinion, fell awfully short of the mark when compared side-by-side. Agreed, the sets and costumes are absolutely fabulous here. (Great catch on the added difficulty of dancing in heels!) If I remember right, Ginger Rogers designed the feather dress she wears during the Cheek to Cheek dance number... although apparently Fred Astaire wasn’t a fan of it because little bits of feathers kept flying off and getting everywhere on set. But even so, I think it’s perfect – the way it floats with the choreography is phenomenal.

During the dance under the veranda, I thought of La La Land as well. Definitely not on the same level. That film (while I do enjoy it) could have been a better traditional musical if they used classically trained Broadway stars in the lead roles.

I am so glad you liked this film. I hope you like The Bandwagon - another viewer request.

Famous quote about Fred Astaire during a screen test for RKO Pictures: "Can't act. Can't sing. Slightly bald. Can dance a little..."

Hahaha! Yeah, someone really nailed that. Kind of like the poor producer at HBO who lost her job for passing on Mad Men.
