This episode made it into a Baltimore City Schools press conference a few years ago. After a string of murders in front of schools the press went after the head of the school system for not having more teachers out searching the bushes for weapons like in this episode. The head of the school board replied that if kids like Michael needed a gun to get he and his brother safely from home to school that’s part of the cost of doing business. If she didn’t have enough staff to search bushes she certainly didn’t have enough staff to provide bodyguards to get kids to school alive. Of course the enrollment numbers in this episode are the good old days Marsha told Bunny 256 enrolled 241 attending. Now if that 241 is over 150 that’s a success story.

It was really unheard of and still Is for a show to make a group of young inexperienced actors the mains of your show but those kids really are the mains this season

Honestly, the security guard murder is the only one that stands out as being purposeless from Marlo's point of view. That was just him asserting his power to feel better about losing a poker game. Even killing the lady in the store, heinous as it was, followed a similar logic to Avon murdering a bunch of inmates to shave years off an already light sentence. I agree the Barksdale crew feels more "human" in the sense that they have interests and passions beyond just the street shit, and are generally just more charismatic as characters. They'll also try and assert at least some vague concept of morality (like Wee-Bey in this episode), but it rings hollow when you look at the deeds they've actually done.

So when I got to the States I learned about the "School - Prison Pipeline", and it made perfect sense from having watched The Wire. Well it turns out that there's a another stage in the middle, incarceration of children, as explained by John Oliver this week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pya-kt5M7uY

Absolutely right about the sense dread here and the comparisons to Season 2. At least the dock workers were adults who (mostly) knew what they were doing. Here we're dealing with innocent kids who have no idea what's coming. They do know something is wrong though. Is it zombies? Or worse.

Poor Sherrod. Not only was it a dictionary, it was a french dictionary. LOL

You've said it a few times, so it's probably worth correcting because it's not a spoiler--Donut hangs around in the same group, but that arc of the show isn't about him in at all the same way it's about the other four.
