This episode has one of my favourite under-the-radar callbacks. The first interaction between Cutty and Spider is in Season 3, when Cutty turns up in Hamsterdam to try and recruit kids for his gym. Cutty wants to show Spider a boxing technique, and mockingly says to him "I ain't gonna hurt you" as a way to goad him into volunteering. Of course it works because Spider has to show he's not scared of anyone hurting him. On this occasion, Cutty again says he doesn't want to hurt Spider, except now he's being sincere. However, it completely backfires for the same reason: Spider has his defences all the way up (like a lot of these young men) and can't even admit that someone MIGHT be able to hurt him. It's pretty sad. There's also the more obvious callback of Omar turning the phrase Bunk used in their first meeting ("A man must have a code") back on him to guilt him into digging deeper into the case. BTW, on that same subject: Crutchfield is obviously a colossal asshole for throwing away the message because he was pissed at Bunk, but why the fuck did he even write it down? 😂 I always found that such weird behaviour.

“A man's got to have a code” is such a great line from the series, that it was used in season four episode one of Game of Thrones by the Hound. Kanard was one of the little kids imitating Omar after the neighborhood shootout with the stash house.

What Dennis is doing this episode is the key part of the current crime fighting strategy in Baltimore. They pay people with a history to be out on the streets breaking up fights and mediating problems before people get killed. It gets flack for not having stats and accountability, and occasionally these people still commit crimes while on the payroll but murders are down.

I've seen schools with computers textbooks etc in a room just like that. Part is not having staff to implement a plan to use them, part is they make great bartering currency to trade other schools for a teacher or needed supplies. Sadly they know if they put those to use they will do little educating because they will get destroyed by the students.

I have tried to watch Oz multiple times. I really wanted to like it it has many ties to David Simons shows behind the scenes but its almost too brutal to watch with too few likable characters. It had the benefit of being the buzzy gritty drama on HBO right as they got into drama seriously it's 2 years before sopranos and 5 years before Wire. I bet if it aired after the wire it would have not made as much of an impact

That's been my hangup as well; I have a friend who watched all of it when it first aired. She said she tried to go back and watch it again on Max, but just can't get through it now.

Randy was the entire reason they went in the vacant because he was worried about the zombies coming for revenge before because of the reputation Chris has on the streets among the kids. Dukie gave him that "There's no special dead, just dead" line when he showed the body. Sherrod also was the guy pressing Namond with the gun in his pocket.
