To say I'm excited is an understatement.

Yay! This is SUCH a fun movie. :)

Thanks, guys! Also, happy Ryan Gosling week on the channel! Such a fun reaction. I agree it hasn't aged so well in places but I wanted to see two things; you both laughing a lot and a reaction to that twist. Both things I got. So many romcoms follow the same, predictable formula but I love this one because it surprises you in the best possible way. My favourite part is the relationship between Cal and Jacob and how it evolves and we realise that he sees his own father in Cal. The character development for both is so good. I love seeing Steve Carrell in more of a serious, vulnerable role instead of his usual comedies.

Shout out to all of the side characters too who all did such a great job. Like John Carroll Lynch as mentioned and Emma Stone's best friend, Josh Groban and Joey King (so well spotted Kevin, I didn't realise it was her until I saw it a few times) amongst others. I loved seeing Kevin Bacon too. And yes, they do say David Lindhagen a lot, Joe. My friends and I jokingly played a drinking game one night to this years ago where we had to drink every time his name was said. For anyone following at home it is said 19 times, lol.

Also, during the Dirty Dancing moment, Emma Stone was fearful of being lifted over someone's head which stemmed from a childhood gymnastics accident where she broke both arms after falling from the parallel bars. So they used a body double in that part which is completely understandable.

That explains why the shot is so far. I thought it was an artistic choice. Regardless the scene works so well

I just think the tone of this movie is so perfect. I love the balance of humor and drama. Thanks for the pick Cristy!

Oh, I so enjoyed your reaction to the big twist! :)

Revisiting this movie now is absolutely fascinating: I saw a post just yesterday explaining how Gamergate was the mainstreaming of incel deology and the manosphere, and the advent of toxic masculinity, but it's all already here in this movie! The PUA lines, the "it's gay to use a straw", the negging ("my friend thinks you're to pretty to be interesting"??), the overconfident douchiness... It's all there in draft already. Of course, then the movie shows how lonely the Gosling character is, and how many walls he's put up, physically and emotionally, which seemingly men who saw this movie in 2011 completely disregarded! Should we put this movie in the same category as Wolf of Wall Street or Fight Club? I also got a kick from Gosling dedicating his career to deconstructing masculine insecurities. Can't wait for you to see Barbie, and if you haven't seen Lars and the Real Girl, I might buy it next!

I've been rewatching Girls, which debuted around the same time as this movie, and it's really shocking how dated it already feels. Like, 2012 does not seem like that long ago to me, but just the blinding whiteness of it all really takes me aback, not to mention the extravagant lifestyles of people with little apparent means of income. Does babysitting actually pay $300 K?

Youtalkingtome

That's some sweet babysitting cash. A grand a night seems steep to me. All I have heard about Girls is that the characters are over-privileged. Common problem in television.

As a gay man, I don't find Ryan Gosling attractive. I might be alone in this, but I don't care lol
