Burrell has now dared two mayors to fire him, and neither one had the guts to do it, even though they both wanted to.

This season gave me so much stress I remember first time watching I was sure Bubbles wasn’t going to live to the end of this episode. The cool thing with this season is that it is such a slow burn because at this point David Simon was just saying I have two more years worth of story if you don’t want to hear two years you’re going to look stupid ending the show before the story is over. Without the slow burn you never would’ve had the time to focus on the kids as much as we have.

The stuff with the state testing brings back memories I was at a middle school when I was the boys age that wasn’t too much better than the one in the show and they did teach to the test like you’re seeing. Being one of the better students comparatively I got put in a special study group that on paper was supposed to be focusing on achieving high scores on the test but really it was a negotiation tactic for what the teachers could do to inspire the students who could do well to give it their all to try and balance out the average. So we had a period each day of the teachers bribing us to do well on the test. Some kids took it too far and made the teachers buy them Game Boys and CD players. I was more reasonable my ask was they pick me up an egg McMuffin when it was convenient for them. The begging and panic of those teachers scared for their careers always stuck with me.

Chris' character is fascinating to me, because I think he genuinely believes that his dispassionate approach to killing people is a kindness. Like, "someone is going to kill this person even if I don't, but at least I can do it as efficiently as possible, and they don't have to suffer." In the scene with Andre at the end, he seems to be actively trying to put his mind at ease, but just not realizing that he isn't really succeeding. Like an uncanny deconstruction of the Benevolent Grim Reaper archetype.

For a second I really thought Bubbles was gunna die too. I'm glad he got the two more years he asked for

“I’ll be alone with the rats” is arguably the most chilling line ever on the show.

Amazing episode. So amazing that no one notices that absence of McNulty! -- And a big welcome back to Poot! I sorta felt bad that, when speaking to Bubbles, Kima volunteers that both Herc and Sydnor are still working out of Major Crimes and then sends him to Herc as if there was no obvious difference between the two. She was working with him before they were transferred into Major Crimes and presumably knows him better than anyone.

I don't wanna oversell the next episode, so I'll just sit here with my fists and jaw clenched until Wednesday.

Agree with the comments - Herc has always been and continues to be the worst. Now we've seen all the forces working against the kids, you see why so many of them end up in the game. This season does an incredible job of portraying that without being overdramatic.

I know, McNulty is missing out on maybe the best season so far! That's really saying something, the show has really evolved into something grand.

Rewatching season 4 is like watching a slow motion train wreck as all these story lines cascade towards catastrophe.

I do wonder if you're missing what's been going on with Michael, or if I have always had it wrong? I think all signs point to Michael's stepdad having sexually abused him when he was smaller. (At least someone did, but my bet is on his stepdad. Perhaps that was even what sent him to jail, I don't know.) The guy was very pointedly saying Michael had grown when he first came in, and I took that as a comment about his age preference. Michael distrusting his 'efforts' with Bug from the start was based on his experiences with a guy, or this guy in particular. His trust issues with guys like Cutty are rooted in the same: Michael distrusts men who are nice to him, because that's how the abuse started.
